Whats the ultimate complement your beer has got?

First timer going in for the plunge

Just remember you can't learn everything in a day. Learning from experience is the best. Take it one brew at a time. Learn as you go. In a short time you will be surprised how easy things become. I read a lot about brewing and learned a lot from these forums. Best advice I can give-Have...

You know you're a home brewer when?

When I tell my wife I'm going to the beer store and she says "I thought you just picked up yeast yesterday?" I reply "I meant I was going to go pick up a case or two." She replies, "Why don't you just brew a batch, yours are so much better?!!"

Keep hop and break in BK

I use a false bottom on a refurbed keg with a dip tube in the center. I also use a grain bag to help contain the hops. Now this can be tough with a IC and when whirlpooling, but I use a CFC. I used to use an IC and what I had was 2 stainless 4ways that fit inside the keg. One at the bottom...

    Oops! Stir bar in primary!

I tape a magnet to the side of my starter as soon as it comes off the stir plate. Then it reminds me when I go to pitch it I tape the magnet to the bottom of my starter to keep the stir bar from going into the wort.

    counter flow vs plate chiller

Don't mind the delay either had water lines freeze this past winter and couldn't chill my wort so I just left it outside (sealed and covered a few times over) and pitched the next day. My only problem with that was I didn't plan for it so I was up at 4:00 am transferring wort and pitching...

How close is your "local" home brew shop?

Reading some of these posts I feel really lucky. I live in Pittsburgh PA and have quite a few shops around. The closest is about 10 mins away and the 2nd is about 15 mins in the opposite direction. I drive past this one when I go to work. There are also two more about 30 min away from me...

    counter flow vs plate chiller

When I chill my wort I use the water from my swimming pool. In the summer it can be in the 80's. So obviously I can't get the temp below the water temp, but its free cooling. So if the water is about 82 I will stop cooling when the wort temp is about 85 which takes about 10 min or so(10...

Is it ok to cool in a freezer before pitching yeast?

That won't be a problem as long as you made sure you sanitized everything good.(Carboys,hoses,etc.) Ive let my wort sit out overnight in the winter to chill and pitched it in the morning with no bad side effects. Maybe not ideal but when my water line freezes I kind of ran out of options. So...

    Streamlining the brew day

Agree with you on that. I usually start my brew day at 6 in the morning done a bit after lunch and then the rest of the day I clean up my notes from brew day and enjoy many homebrews. I find it hard to drink anything but homebrews on brew day.
