GPS for your car. Who has them??

I just recently switched to a Garmin Nuvi from a Garmin Quest. I've owned various Garmin receivers over the last 12 years or so and have always been happy with them (except for the eTrex series, but that's another story). That said, I like the Quest much better than the Nuvi. Sure, the Nuvi has...

Is it ok that I don't really feel like going all grain?

If you're making good beer with extract, then by all means keep doing it if that's what you want to do. Even though I brew all-grain now (mainly because I enjoy the process), the elitist attitude of "if you're using extract you're not really brewing" is what has kept me away from a certain...

    Hops (the restaurant chain)

That explains a lot. This is one of the things I hate at most restaurants these days. I want the person that takes my order to also bring me my food and drinks. I can't stand when the food comes to the table and the server asks "who ordered this?" I had seen Hops restaurants when they were...

    ingredients and taxes

I think you hit the nail on the head here. In Ohio, soda is considered a non-food item and is taxed. Unfortunately, most convenience stores also charge tax on bottled water (which is non-taxable) since they come from the same manufacturer (ie Dasani and Aquafina are Coke and Pepsi products). The...

new AG setup: test or brew?

My first AG batch was a test brew using old ingredients and tap water (I usually use bottled water - my well water sucks) just to walk through the process. It let me figure out my efficiency and boil-off rate, and didn't cost me anything but propane.

Warning - Don't over tighten Star San lid!!

Same here - both of mine are broken now. And the bottle's still about half full.

Columbus (OH) Microbrew Festival 2007 and homebrew contest

I did make it there for about 3 hours. It was pretty good, but it was really crowded. They need to have it outside or something.

Columbus (OH) Microbrew Festival 2007 and homebrew contest

A little short notice, but here's the info: The Columbus Microbrew Festival is coming to the North Market with its original six-pack (of attending microbreweries) and one outstanding newcomer! The event was such a success last year that all six of Columbus’ microbreweries are coming back and...

    Do you whisk in DME?

I'm with malkore on this one. I'm usually doing late extract additions, so I don't want any cold water in there. I just try to slowly shake the DME into the pot while stirring briskly. I'll have to try the whisk though, I hadn't thought of that.

    Fidgety New Brewer

It's amazing what some time in the bottles can do for a homebrew. I tasted my first batch (an amber ale) at bottling, then after about 2 weeks in the bottle. I thought it was terrible. I was hoping it might get better, but I was eager to start my next batch, so I dumped half the bottles...

    Caramel cream ale?

So, I've read this thread a couple times, drooled on the keyboard, went out and got the ingredients for v.1 with less vanilla ($9 for 4oz of vanilla extract - how does this compare to everyone else's price?) and am ready to brew this weekend. Hopefully I will finally brew something my wife (not...

    67 degree Fermentation

BYO has both an all-grain and an extract with grain recipe for an Anchor Steam clone in their '150 Classic Clone Recipes' issue. Either buy the back issue from them (it's worth it) or I can post one of the recipes for you.

    5, 10, or 15 gallon batches?

At the moment I only have equipment to do 5 gallons, but this is fine for me because I like variety. If I make something I really like, I can always just make another batch. The time it takes isn't too much of an issue to me because I enjoy the process as much as the product. That being...

Is a 30 quart brew kettle big enough?

Is that for stainless steel or aluminum? I got the SS cajun cooker 30 qt from Home Depot for $99. As has already been said here, it is cutting it real close for AG. I think 30 qts is all the way to the brim. I put 6 gal. in it and it was just a couple inches from the top. I may look for a...

    Propane

Glad somebody asked this question. I just brewed my first batch last night and was wondering how much propane I used. Luckily I have one for my grill and I 'inherited' two more when we moved into the new house (one even about half full!). I guess I'll be making a trip to U-Haul soon.

    Greetings from Central Ohio

I bought the Two-Stage Brewing System from Homebrew Adventures, since it seemed to be one of the most inexpensive setups ($78.55) that had the features I was looking for, including a glass carboy and a large (7.8 gallon) plastic primary/bottling bucket. A large glass carboy for primary will...

    Greetings from Central Ohio

Hi all! I've finally gotten into homebrewing after thinking about it for years. I haven't brewed a batch yet (will probably brew my first this weekend) but I have been reading as much as I can - especially here on the forums. There seems to be an almost unlimited supply of good info and...
