+1 on season of the year. That is one drawback to making the big porter I did today. It will be ready about the same time the temp hits 100 outside. Not many people looking to chug porters in the heat.
I buy beers that I have never tried before. If I like them I try to find a clone recipe and brew it. Otherwise I look up recipes and see what catches my eye. I just found the recipe for imperial honey porter on this site. It sounded good and had good reviews, so I brewed it this morning.
I brewed this today. OG was 1.090. It was also my first time using pellet hops. I must say I did not get the hop aroma that I usually notice when I brew with whole hops. This makes me a little nervous, but it was a lot easier. It looks so good! Waiting will be hard with this one.
I switched to 6.5 gal. Carboys and this is less of a problem. When I had a 5 gal. Carboy I usually stuffed the 3/8 tubing straight into the stopper; although, a carboy cap would probably be better.
I take readings to know what my ABVs are, but it does hurt a little when I dump the 6 or 7 ounces out of the hydrometer flask. With all the beer I have you would think that would not bother me, but it does.
I have the wire shelving in the garage and would not trust it as a brew stand without modifying the shelf supports. I made the stand in palmers book for 100 bucks and love it.
If you already have a 48qt cooler, i would use that. You can make small or big beers with it without worrying. Batch sparging is easy and it works well. If you make a copper manifold you can batch or fly sparge with it and it will last forever. Make sure you clean it out after every use or it...
I too have a 48qt cooler and used a 1/2 inch copper tube. The book how to brew covers this well, or just do a google search on building a MLT. I used bargainfittings.com for my valves and bulk head fittings. They have everything and fast shipping. I batch sparge and am very happy with my setup.
I noticed a lot of people had problems with the bazooka tube. I think im going to try it without a strainer and dump it right from the boil kettle into the fermenter. If it gets stuck I will make a spyder or just use bags, but the simplicity of draining it all in sounds good.
I have read about the hop spyder, but was thinking if the hops dont have an affect in the primary, why worry about it and not just dump the whole thing in. After I chill using my IC just open the valve, pitch, and thats it.
