    Where are my beersmith files?

Hi, The files are in the "C:\Program Files\BeerSmith" directory on most systems. However, Vista has a special "compatibility" directory that shows up if you are running as a non-admin user and go to that directory (there's a little Compatibility directory icon on the file explorer when you...

    IBU calculation?

Hi, Its a mixed bag. In terms of pure IBU measurement in a test-tube, in general First Wort hops (FWH) results in slightly higher IBU numbers than a comparable time boil. However, the perception of the bitterness with FWH is generally that the hoppy flavor is smoother. In blind taste...

    Anyone good with icons?

My apologies for posting this here, but its my hope that there might be someone here who's good with icons and also a brewer. I'm working on the next version of BeerSmith and I need someone who can create decent brewing icons. My artistic skills are...well...non existent. I need some...

Beersmith Reset Lost My Recipes. Help!!!

Hi, If you backup the *.BSM files, they contain all of your data including the ingredients. The BAK files contain older versions of the BSM files just in case something gets corrupted. The BAK files can be renamed back to BSM files and opened up - but they are really just extra insurance...

Beersmith Reset Lost My Recipes. Help!!!

Hi, I may have found the source of your troubles. If you have insufficient privileges to write to the Program Files directory, Vista conveniently stores your data in a "compatibility" directory. To see it, use explorer and go to "C:\Program Files\BeerSmith", then click on the "Compatibility...

Beersmith - I have tried to register to use the forum

Hi! #1 - I activated your account manually - you should be able to log in now #2 - Your equipment (15 gal tun, 5 gal batch) likely fits into a single batch sparge. You can force it into a two step sparge by using less of the mash tun (Batch sparge using < 100% of the tun under the mash...

Beersmith - I have tried to register to use the forum

Question 1 - Nope- the registration on the forum is free. If you did not receive your registration email most likely it was caught in a spam filter somewhere. Send me an email and I can manually enable the account. Question 2 - I'm assuming you are talking about batch sparge here? You can...

    Beersmith:ingredients list disappers occasionally

Try deleting the "newopts14.opts" file from the BeerSmith directory (usually its under C:\Program Files). This file was causing some problems. Also make sure you have the latest version from the web site. It has a fix that should prevent this from recurring. Cheers, Brad

Beersmith Reset Lost My Recipes. Help!!!

Are you sure you don't have any BSM files anywhere else? There should be these as well as *.bak files in the BeerSmith directory. I have no idea how they could even be deleted - the program never deletes them. Brad

Beersmith Reset Lost My Recipes. Help!!!

Redweasel, Thanks for the PM - do quick search on your computer for files with the extension "*.bsm" using the windows find files tool. My guess is that you actually have two installs of the program (or at least two directories) and you may have inadvertently opened the wrong one...

Hops did not drop during dry hopping...

Some will float, some will sink. Leaf hops tend to float a lot more than pellets. I would not worry much - just try to siphon as little of the hops as possible. Cheers, Brad

How do you control your Fermentation Temperatures?

Hi, I wrap mine with towels and run a fan on them - it cuts the temp by about 10 degrees which great for ales if you ferment in the house. Cheers, Brad

    Beer Gelatin

Hi, Normally you just take a packet of plain gelatin and slowly dissolve it into some warm water (I heat mine over the stove just a bit). You want to heat it just enough to get the gelatin to dissolve - no more. Then you gently add it to the secondary and stir it in. Let it sit for 4-5...

    Adjusting volume when bottling?

You can dilute the beer, but you will end up with thinner (lower gravity) beer. Also you need to be careful to pre-boil the water to push out the oxygen in it and also sterilize it. Cheers, Brad
