Can you use a refractometer for both OG and FG measurements?

I only use the refractometer for OG and FG. Works great and doesn't waste any beer. The online conversion tool (Brix WRI) on Brewers Friend is easy to use. Just make sure you're putting in Brix.

    Reusing old barrel

Is there a problem with using boiling water to rinse? I have done that before... why do you say up to 180F

    Reusing old barrel

So how many Campden tablets would you use for 5gal barrel? I think my 20% abv beer might actually sanitize the barrel itself haha... but might as well try the campden thing first right

    Reusing old barrel

I have a barrel that I never rinsed after the last beer, then it sat empty for several months. Assuming I can get it to hold water again, can I reuse it for my next beer? No signs of mold or infection (that I can see) and the beer hopefully going into it is 20%abv so I'm not too concerned about...

    Highest OG to start fermenting?

Think I'm gonna pitch the 099 anyways, why not, and also add 7-10lbs additional sugar during ferment and see what happens. Who knows where it will finish but should be a nice slow fireside sipper for many years to come.

    Barrel Aging American Barleywine/IIPA

Just my opinion: You added a lot of late addition hops which would be nice for a DIPA and maybe not necessary for Barleywine? Just curious why you did that? You have a very nice barleywine recipe. I think if you were to age it for a year or two you will have a great drinking Barleywine and the...

AM I Crazy? Or should beer be simple and enjoyable?

One of the things I like about the hobby is it's as simple or complex as you want to make it. Quick tap water BIAB or extract, go for it! Multi step decoction mash with RO and brewing salts? Do it! Personally I like the more complex stuff because I think some of the process shows through in...

    Highest OG to start fermenting?

Cool thanks guys. It's def fermenting a lot now. So I'm gonna reoxygenate it today and maybe throw some more nutrient at it as well.

    Highest OG to start fermenting?

Wow okay, thanks for the info. Was the flavor of the Barleywine okay despite the dryness?

    Highest OG to start fermenting?

Mash was 146 for 90min. During boil I separated a gallon and boiled down into a thick syrup and readded, I think that's where I forgot to take into account for the OG. Anyways I'll just see what happens... Yeast is WLP 500 and planning on pitching Super High Gravity WLP099 in a few days

    Highest OG to start fermenting?

I just brewed a stout, OG is 1.129. I am hoping that's not too high to throw yeast into? I don't want a finish at 1.040...

12 Beers of Christmas 2018 Edition

Nice, glad you enjoyed it! The beer seems to be changing fast, not sure I've ever had quite the same experience as I've cracked them opened slowly over the months.

12 Beers of Christmas 2018 Edition

Sure thing! It's a kitchen sink beer but it's a fun process if you are into that sort of thing. My notes aren't perfect... but this will get you damn close: 5oz carapils 8oz black malt 8oz crystal 40L 8oz Caramunich 11oz crystal 120L 12oz chocolate 12oz roasted barley 1lb Flaked oats 1lb dark...

What's the best bit of knowledge you picked up on in 2018?

Water profiles which have tremendously helped my lagers, and high abv experimentation. Made a dfh 120 inspired 18%ipa that's actually quite good.

12 Beers of Christmas 2019 Edition

I'd personally much rather have a stout than a cider... Not much of a cider guy myself, sorry
