Cold Crash and Dry Hop Question

That’s not entirely a bad idea actually. It would need to be something coated in a food grade not contaminating thing. If you use stainless hardware to weigh it down like some have suggested, stainless is not magnetic. It would have to have iron. I have one of those magnetic scrubbers for the...

Cold Crash and Dry Hop Question

Thanks guys I think this answered the specifics to my question. Another thread popped up today or was revived with a similar issue and it gave me a little more light as well. Having thought about it and seeing a couple of ideas involving balloons I think I have a great idea that combines those...

Cold Crash and Dry Hop Question

So to address a few topics mentioned here. I did see the ballon tactics and even a catheter bladder bag to prevent suck back or rather suck back co2 instead. I meant negative pressure as in vacuum you are correct. With waiting for the hops to settle, I thought you need to get the beer off...

Cold Crash and Dry Hop Question

I’m still newish here, mostly posted in mead. Been brewing for a few years. Anyway I’ve been doing a ton of reading on here and haven’t quite found an answer that suits my question completely. I have an idea of what to do but want to consult with more experience brewers. I’m doing an IPA 5...

    First brew this weekend

I think we have all had a major blow over at one point. Learn once ok, learn twice shame on you....I learned twice this weekend adding nutrient to my mead too fast....like adding a mentos to coke. Dang!

    Priming with corn sugar?

I find that 4oz per 5 gallons is the sweet spot for me. Carb level is drinkers preference.

    Priming with corn sugar?

[emoji848]🤦*♂️Good to know, thanks guys. I was sitting going, “shoot I’m gonna have a off/sweet flavor to my beer.”

    Priming with corn sugar?

I’m about to bottle soon and realized I didn’t have enough priming sugar for my whole batch. Will corn sugar work? Will it have the same effect? Is there a different amount I should put in compared to regular priming sugar?

    Hydrometer on Mead?

That’s what I’ve been doing but I don’t know why I got hung up on this this time around....too smart for my own good I guess [emoji51]

    Hydrometer on Mead?

Forget ratio. I have a 5 gallon batch. 4 gallons as water, the rest honey. 14.698. When calculating lbs per gallon. Do I use 5 or 4? Lbs per 4 gallons of water, or lbs per final volume (5gallons). Because I would think you wouldn’t divid the honey by itself. The honey IS part of the 5 gallons...

    Weird layer

You’d think huh. I used only light malt. No dark grains. The first time I did it it came out more like a light brown, but I used different hops this time.

    Advice

You keep the hydrometer in the bottle? Doesn’t Krusen buildup a ring around where you want to read?

    Hydrometer on Mead?

What I’m trying to say is do you go by how much honey is in that gallon, or how much honey to water ratio. Is that honey part of the gallon or not when sayin Xlbs per gallon. My five gallon batch only had 4 gallons of water in it, but with the honey it’s 5. Is the amount of honey/gallon divided...

    Weird layer

Ok good that’s what I thought, just haven’t seen that drastic of a change in color before. Thanks.

    Weird layer

So I noticed today that my American Pale Ale has a darker layer at the top. It is about 2-3 inches at the top of the carboy. I popped the plug to take a whiff but it didn’t smell bad, actually smelled good. This is a secondary rack. I have a second 5 gal carboy with the same exact thing, but I...

    Hydrometer on Mead?

So my hydrometer broke today anyway, so there you go. I did get a reading before that happened in the batch I did today. So today I estimated 1.102 on 14.698lbs in a 5 gallon batch. I used 512oz for 4 gallons of water. I measured 1.102 on the button at 70F degrees. But I have a follow up...

    Hydrometer on Mead?

I plan to check it with distilled water at 60-65F and see where it’s at. It should be at 1.000. If it’s ****, I’ll look at getting a new/better one.

    Hydrometer on Mead?

I’ve always used my hydrometer for beer (it does say beer on it), but does it work the same for mead? Is there a conversion for the gravity reading for mead vs beer? I just did two small batches and this is my findings but they don’t add up. One batch I had 124 Oz of water and 3.29/lbs of honey...

My OG's are ALWAYS ALWAYS LOW!

What I found with kits is that only do 1/2-2/3 of the water in the wort and top off at the end, but they say to top off until you reach the target OG that they recommend. I have ended up with 4-1/2 or 4-3/4 gallons in a '5 gallon' kit. You lose some of the liquid extracts in the canisters etc...

Adding Rum(liquor) to wort in Mash or Boil?

You need to be careful of the alc% too. You'd have to use quite a bit, but if your doing pre fermentation the alcohol could kill some of the yeast in areas that were not stirred evenly. Also if your priming with sugar to carb, you're relying on the yeast to carb the bottles, if you put too much...
