    Does priming increase ABV?

Ok well having said that, a follow up question. Let’s say I want to take a hydrometer reading of the beer after conditioning in the bottle for a few weeks. Is that an ok way to measure it again, and would the bubbles from carbonation have an affect on the buoyancy of the hydrometer? I know this...

    Does priming increase ABV?

By adding priming sugar to carbonate through fermenting a little in the bottle, does it, and how much would it increase the alcohol. I have had a couple beers that give me a head change more than what I think it would. Most the time I get around 5-5.5% but a couple of my beers give a feel of a...

    Homebrewing Progression

Ya #9 money. I have a new toy almost every brew. Some just a few bucks some big tickets. Once you start going you’ll find/ask yourself if I only had ‘?’. Just enjoy. Perfect your system. Who cares what we say, if you have fun and the beer is drinkable cheers. When you get your next Christmas...

    Homebrewing Progression

The 6 gallon carboy would be better than a bucket but that might be too much head space for a 3 gallon batch. It’s perfect for 5 gallon. If you have a 6 gallon kettle you could brew 4 gallon and do an 1 gallon top off for 5ish. It wouldn’t cost you anything more than more ingredients since the...

    Partial Mash/Steep Question

It’s been awhile but Brewers Best generalized instructions were always 20mins 150-160 degrees

    Partial Mash/Steep Question

Thanks. I ask because the only time I have used it, it was used as a steeping step. Not saying that kit was correct, just a reference.

So include the Vienna during mash?

Temperature swings with Inkbird + chest freezer

In the inkbird there is another setting you have to consider. Look in the manual, I don’t remember the specific name, but it is the duty cycle that allows the motor to rest. Regardless of your temperature swing, if the motor had been on just a few minutes ago, it won’t turn on. This setting...

    Gelatin floaters....

I my experience it is best to add the gelatin before chilling/cold crashing. Let it mix and get all dissolved in the beer throughout the fermenter then chill. Since the beer was that cold already, the gelatin may have gelatinized before it could do its thing.

    Post-boil filtration?

The balloon wouldn’t burst because I can close the valve. I could have a constant pressure in the carboy with the tank, but this allows me to close to the carboy, open to the balloon and refill, close the valve to the tank and open to the carboy. I guess to answer about why use the balloon, I...

    Post-boil filtration?

CO2 pressure to offset cold crash volume change. Sucks CO2 from balloon. This is what I came up with. The valves allow me to add more to the balloon without removing my stopper. Depending on conditions and time the balloon will be depleted/also shrunk from temperature change in the gas. Open...

Bottled batch has aged strangely - carbonation issue

Mixing issue? How did you add the sugar? Perhaps more made it into those bottles.

    Partial Mash/Steep Question

So my next brew will be a step towards going grain. I have done plenty of extract brews with and without steeping grains. My next batch I’m planning on doing a Honey Belgian Wit Saison Triple (LoL bunch of miscellaneous stuff left over combine with new additions and Mangrove Belgian yeast). I...

    Homebrewing Progression

This. I joined (well came back to) about 4 months ago and really started reading almost every post even if I think I know what will be asked or said, it never fails to hear something new. I would say my knowledge has been ten fold since really reading this site on a daily bases. The more you...

    O.G.

Ya you would be surprised just how much more you can get out. Even if it was warm. Maybe be enough for a couple points. Tip: scrap the lid too, a lot of times it’s on the can lid.

    O.G.

Or not all the extract was removed from the can/bag. When I use extract if a bag squeeze it out like tooth paste, if a can/container I use a spatula. Was the temperature around 70F? Did you calibrate the hydrometer in water at room temp? Maybe there is more liquid than you think. It’s not the...

    Pitching Rate Tolerance

What happens if he over pitches? I’ve been wondering that myself. Is there such a thing? What if you make a starter and it becomes ‘too big’? How do you know/measure a starter (how many cells are in it).

    Same Off Flavor

Do you add any steeping steps for specialty grains? That tends to ‘freshen up’ extract. Maybe you just don’t like the taste of extract. Some people can really tell the difference, especially if you drink real good fresh from scratch beer. Have you ever had an extract beer not your own. Someone...

Weighing down hop bag when dry hopping

Maybe some decorative glass rocks. We have some in jars with candles and plants and stuff. Essentially a smushed marble. Shot glass is a great idea. Does anyone NOT have a shot glass? SS Nuts, bolts or extra fittings. Whiskey stones? Marble Chess piece? Not sure if stones are a good idea or...

    First Batch Questions

I find that 3 weeks in the bottle gives me the best result for carbonation. 2 weeks rarely has the amount I prefer. And I actually always add about 1/2 Oz more sugar than recommended for the style, because I like my beer more fizzy.
