Think this would work for hop additions?

Probably work better than a mesh bag. Is it stainless? If not, rust might be a concern.

Best beer you can't make again?

So I'm knocking back the latest to go in the kegerator and loving it, but realize I can't do it again. I bought the Wild Card Ale kit from Austin Homebrew, it is basically a mixed bag of the grain orders they mess up, they just top it off with enough 2 row to make sure you can mash. They...

    Carbing up a replacement keg

Similar kegerator situation and I had decent success with my recent swap like this: 1. Cold crash carboy for a few days 2. purge keg, then fill it to ~5psi 3. Rack from cold carboy to keg - I use a fancy DIY contraption to push from the carboy into the keg out post at ~3psi (my contraption has...

Has anyone used this type of fermentor

Here is a huge thread on the fast ferment conical. That is part of what helped convince me to buy one when I was still just lurking here. They are nice and work as advertised in my experience, but they are cumbersome. They don't fit in my ferm fridge and I got tired of swapping water bottles...

Texas Fast Ferment Conical Fermenter - Austin area

I'm selling my Fast Ferment that has done two batches for me. It is in good shape and comes with an extra collection ball along with all the stuff that comes with it. (As Seen Here). Nothing wrong with it, I'm just finding it is not my style and I want to free up some space. I have it...

Can I use a large mason jar for yeast harvesting?

You will probably be surprised at how much you get when it crashes in the fridge, at least enough to make a starter from if needed.

Very new to this, trying to figure out what I really need.

Agree with everyone's advice above for the most part. My only addition is not to go cheap/small on the kettle and burner. They both make such a big difference in the length of your brew day it is worth the initial investment, and should you find that you hate this hobby you will likely still...

Advice for tweaking my NEIPA grist

Playing with the BF calculator on this recipe, it looks like it would be tough to get it much lighter colored with that grain bill unless you drop in OG too. Maybe replace some oats for more wheat? May not be noticeable with color, but may help with the head a touch? From what I have read, but...

Can I use a large mason jar for yeast harvesting?

I often use larger mason jars with the same 2 piece lid, no problem. When I use the larger jars I try to leave more beer on top to take up the headspace. The nice thing about smaller containers is being able to split them into about the right size for your next batch. I have been doing a...

    how to increase mouthfeel?

Thanks, I'll give barley a shot next week. After playing around on BF I think I'll sub barley for 10% of my base (maris otter) and see where that gets me. Currently doing 1 gallon BIAB test batches. I racked the current batch to secondary last night and could have drank the whole thing...

    how to increase mouthfeel?

How much barley to achieve results? I am working on a low ABV ale (trying to stay around 3%) and I really like the flavor I'm getting, but it really lacks in mouthfeel. Barley sounds like a good option if I'm not adding so much it blows my ABV up.

How many gallons of homebrew in 2016?

I'm new around here, but here's what I have done since joining the forum instead of just lurking: +7 5 Barrel IPA +5 Wild Card Ale +7 Spiced FestAle +5 Red X / Northdown Smash +1 Low ABV Ale Experiment 18966

    Banging/Drilling right by fermenter

My ferm chamber (chest freezer) is in my workshop and regularly gets banged on, used as a sawhorse, and listens to rock and roll and high volumes and the yeast have never cared. +1 to checking your airlock seal. If that wasn't the trick, were there any big temps swings during construction...

    Howdy from Austin

Long time lurker, first time poster. I've used this forum for reference a lot over the last few years, but I found and old thread about some Milk Mead that I needed to resurrect to get some help so I finally joined. I have a lot of fermenting and culturing experience (cheese, saurkraut...

Milk-Mead (a spin on koumiss) instruction, recipe & info

Hey guys, I've been lurking on this forum for about a year, but finally joined to get in on this thread I uncovered the other night and hope it can be resurrected a bit. I have a milk goat and milk cow, so I have been really wanting to come up with something new to do with all the milk stacking...
