    Fuzzy white bugs

So I've seen these little fuzzy white bugs on my hop plants lately, turns out after some research they are known as wooly aphids. So far the numbers seem to be rather low and my plants seem to be recovering nicely from our hail storm here in GA a few weeks ago. Something is still eating my...

    SOB earwigs!

Yeah I've had the same issue with mine here in GA, and treated with sevin dust didn't seem to do much to stop them ill have to take this box of pool grade DE back to home depot and get some food grade stuff.

    Smoked amber ale input

After thinking about it I think I might drop the Cascades in the dry hopping, after hearing from Folster I think the citrus flavor/aroma would clash with the overall taste of the beer and the earthy/spicy flavor I'll get from the fuggles and willamette.

    Smoked amber ale input

Yeah, I've read that too high of IBU's will bring out a stronger/bitter smoke flavor but hadn't considered that the hop aroma might conflict and make it weird also. I don't want too strong of a smoke flavor or aroma and more of a hop flavor so I only used a very small amount of smoked malt. I...

    Smoked amber ale input

Thanks for the input, I've been reading this forum and other books like crazy while I patiently get all my gear together. I think I wanna make this for my first brew.

    Smoked amber ale input

I have been mulling this idea over for some time and I think I have my recipe that I want to try but wanted to see what everyone here thinks. 10 Gallon Batch accounting for boiloff and trub should have around 11 gallons going into carboys. Grains: 11 lbs Pale Malt (2 Row) US (2.0 SRM)...

Nice! I need to update my plant growth pics now that I have coir going to them and a few are starting to be tall enough to train.

    Container growing in GA

Update pics of all the plants taken a few minutes ago. I'm glad to see willamette cruising right along and the Perle is awesome to watch go. Northern Brewer - kinda stalled and haven't seen any other shoots yet Perle - Doing awesome Cascade - Close to the ground you can see about 4 or 5...

    Container growing in GA

Ok so here's a picture of the leaves on my Northern Brewer that are just being chewed up. It's hard to tell if the rain we've been having lately or the soapy/pepper mix spray is doing anything, but they came out of the ground growing the best and now seem like they've stalled cause of the leaf...

    pest control

I'm having almost the same issue, mostly with my Northern Brewer but now its starting to show up on my other hop plants as well. I found a product online called Liquid Ladybug but its pricey and I haven't been able to check and see if I can get it locally. I might go the 7 spray form until they...

    What's your favorite fertilizer?

Not sure about spraying the leaves directly with miracle gro, its a 24-8-16 formula that might be a bit high on the N side of things to go directly on the leaves; maybe someone with more experience growing hops knows better than me as I'm also a first year grower. From what I've read on some of...

    Container growing in GA

Well sprayed them down with fine mist from water hose and then sprayed with a water bottle that had a few drops of normal dawn and some cayenne pepper in it.. hopefully that will help some. All plants seem to be doing good but more are showing little holes in it with no sign of who the culprit...

    Container growing in GA

Well so far they are growing good, but looks like I'm already starting to get some nibbling pests (little holes in some of the leaves, mostly on northern brewer) and I think I've spotted some red spider mites. I'll be taking some preemptive action tomorrow after work, wanna catch them early...

    Container growing in GA

So here are the picture updates of the little guys poking out of the soil mix after week 1. These were taken about 5 mins ago. Northern Brewer Perle Cascade Fuggle Willamette is just breaking the surface right now; hopefully it will do better.

    Twine or Wire, any difference?

I got the coir yarn stuff from freshops.com the shipping seemed a bit much so I went with 2 orders of it; this will last me for 4 years if I decide to be lazy and just toss the strings each year. The shipment did arrive pretty quick though.. I think within 3-4 days.

    Container growing in GA

I wasn't sure how well they would do im my GA clay yard, plus I kinda wanna control the root spread from these as I don't want them to start mixing with each other or taking over my yard. This way I can control the soil conditions and with these containers I can't over or underwater them as long...

    Container growing in GA

YAY! all my plants are starting to poke little buds through the soil. :rockin: I'll see if they are a bit bigger for pics tomorrow.

    New grower - central Ohio

If your still looking at places to get your rhizomes or plantings from I see lots of people getting them from Great Lakes Hops I got mine from ThymeGarden.com. I am going the container route myself as I wanted to be able to control soil conditions as well as root spreading. They take a bit...

    Container growing in GA

So I received my rhizomes from ThymeGarden.com last weekend, I pre ordered rooted cuttings for all but Cascade as they didn't have that as an option for them. I ordered 2 of each of the following: Fuggle Willamette Cascade Perle Northern Brewer I am pleased at how large the rooted cuttings...
