    "Beer" for smoking

Not sure how much flavor it would impart, but you could also soak your wood chips in beer.

    Marriage counseling advice

Along with the counseling I might recommend a book. Love and Respect It comes from a Christian perspective, and that may not be everyone's thing, but the principles are still sound and if applied have great results.

    Married not even a half-year...

Dunno, but I'm sure they could fix the swelling and any lacerations caused from breaking the ring once they had it off. Could mean the difference between having a scar and losing a finger, I'll take the scar.

    Married not even a half-year...

I also have a tungsten ring and although cutting it off may be difficult without the right tools; I was told that if they need to get it off to get it cold or freeze it and smack it with a hammer and it will just shatter. Titanium won't do that, have to have something to cut it off.

    Boil Kettle Issue: BeerSmith Related

I think the issue with your boil off rate comes from how wide those kettles are, more surface area for the water to evaporate from. I would make sure to boil with just enough heat to keep a boil and no more. You could also adjust your boil off rate in beersmith to say 2 gallons an hour and just...

Has anyone seen this?! (yeast starter saga)

HAHAHA, after reading all 69 pages of this thread I go back out to drunken ramblings and all the advertisements are trying to get me mental help telling me to not give up hope. :D Awesome

Hops Direct just put up 2012 Crop

yeah I'm still rather bitter and upset; I saw them as soon as they went up on the site and had them in my cart but was debating about purchasing another type of hop. Before I could complete the purchase they were sold out. :(

    Grain bill, critique/commentary wanted

So I'm trying to put together a grain bill for a nice malty winter ale that I'll be using some spices in for the holidays. I have a basic idea of what I would like to use but my brain keeps telling me its too many caramel malts. Any comments or ideas would be great to help me figure out what I...

    refractometer question

@ ajf I read all the posts but must have missed that part, glad to see that was included and thank you for running those tests. I am interested in how these tests turn out, as I am still getting used to my equipment and all grain. I've done 3 batches so far, 2 with a Refractometer way out of...

    refractometer question

If I might suggest another variable to the discusison of grain bills, the Mash temp. We already know that different mash temps give more/less dextrins and effect the body and attenuation of the beer. Perhaps this is where the Brix conversion is getting the swings from 1.03 to 1.07.

Help me make a Smoked Rye Porter

I don't have any personal experience with smoked malts but that amount seems a bit high, I think if I remember right from reading that 10% of the grist lends to a pronounced smoke flavor. A peat smoked malt will lend to an even harsher bitterness with scotch like tones. Also keep in mind that...

    Completed Oast

Oh I would agree with you there, but I think that most homegrown hops being dried in this manner aren't going to be that deep.

    Completed Oast

I've built a similar but smaller wall mount unit to dry my hops. I worked around alot of upright blast freezers in the blood bank industry; and something I noticed that I plan to do. To help with airflow and drying don't make the shelves the full depth of the cabinet. You leave about 6-8 inches...

    Container growing in GA

Been a while since I've updated this thread so I figured a few pics were in order. All 5 of my hop plants are growing well up their strings with Cascade only a few inches from hitting the top and Perle already over the top. Northern Brewer, Fuggle, and Williamette are all between 10-14 feet...

    Earwigs eating my hops?

+1 to neem oil, I used a 3 in 1 from Organocide I picked up at HD. Mix according to directions and spray a nice heavy coat on all your leaves and some on the ground around your hop plants at dusk. Kill or flick off any earwigs you find and check back at night in a few days. If you see them again...
