    1st cook...some ?'s and observations

awesome guys! I feel much better now. So adjusted OG w/ temperature is probably more like 1.048...MUCH closer, plus it probably wasn't mixed as well as it should have been. I think I'm going to move it to a slightly cooler room too. Great info...thanks!!

    redesign my home-made wort chiller

yeah I did move the chiller around as water was running through it to move the beer around. Thanks guys. I'll give it a shot. I don't have plumbing solder, just electrical stuff, so I'll just use thin wire to hold it together. Thanks!!

    1st cook...some ?'s and observations

Hi All! Well I did my first cook yesterday and I must say I think it went pretty well! Made a mess with the wort and cut myself on the LME can (bled everywhere), but besides that not bad! First off, I gotta say brewing in my garage with a turkey fryer setup was the best choice I made. Had...

    questions about my tap shank

no...not THAT tap shank...the one for my keg fridge. Which, by the way, I just got and is pretty old and beat-up (it was in a bar or restaurant), but it still gets cold (although the compressor gets pretty hot) and it was only $75!! Anyway, I'm going to give it a good detailing to make it look...

    redesign my home-made wort chiller

Hi all, I just brewed my first batch yesterday and I'm using mostly 2nd-hand stuff. I bought a home-made wort chiller that is kind of oddly designed (it was thrown in with the other stuff I bought). It's very tall and the coils are very spread-out. I have a 30qt aluminum pot and it fits...

    two grommets?

Thanks! Sorry, but whats the "fv"? I take it you're referring to the primary bucket, right?

    two grommets?

reminds me of those folgers commercials. Hey another question: when it comes time to rack to my secondary, how am I supposed to rack and not suck up tons of trub if I can't see through the bucket? I think I'm going glass for my primary next time. btw, I have a 6gal glass carboy for my secondary.

    two grommets?

I'm just going to use two triple air-locks. No problem with doing that right? Thanks guys!

    two grommets?

I'm getting ready for my first cook tomorrow and I noticed the used "ale pail" fermenter has two grommet holes in the lid. I can't think why there would be two...two airlocks? airlock and a blow-off?

    shopping for first ingredients kit

Thanks! I didn't see that one. Looks perfect. Think I'm going to give that one a try when I'm ready.

    shopping for first ingredients kit

I'm gearing-up to try my hand at some brewing. I'm starting to shop around at the different ingredients kits wondering what style I should make. One of my favorite beers is Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Can anyone recommend a kit that's close? Or "If you like that, you'll love this..." If my...

WTB - your old brewing equipment!!

Gotcha! Good to know. I'll start doing some research...

WTB - your old brewing equipment!!

Thanks Zeekage! I've actually collected most, if not all, of the basic equipment I'll need: 6gal glass carboy, bottling bucket, wort chiller, thermo/hydrometers, etc. so I'll probably pass on this groupon. All I need now is a good brewpot and a few odds and ends....and a LOT more knowledge...

    Corney kegs?

11 corney kegs, 2 without lids and one pin-lock. A beer meister that still gets cold and doesn't run loud. $175

    Corney kegs?

Got 'em! And my car only smells a little bit like a dive bar.

    Corney kegs?

Don't know, but I don't think he thinks they're worth much. He said make me an offer. I'm going to low-ball him....if I can ever nail down a time to see them.

    Corney kegs?

Thanks guys. He sent me a video of the stuff for sale including a beat-up kegolator that I might buy too. Here's a better picture of the Corney lids, since the relief valve has a ring to pull, I think that confirms it's a ball lock, right? Trying to meet up with him, but he's hard to...
