No need to worry about separatng the cold break. In fact, the only reason I bother with filtering the hops out is because it will clog my pump and chller. It doesn't hurt to have any of that in the fermenter though. If you want to whirlpool, swirl the kettle fast and then leave it for 20-30...

I use a dip tube to the bottom center of everything. Filter the hops with a hanging hop bag and you can suck every ounce out of your BK.

I added both at bottling (except when using beans), but I don't see any problems at secondary if you're certain fermentation is complete. I wouldn't do it if you're racking to secondary after only 2 wks in primary.

Thanks for the feedback on the yeast, guys. I usually stick to tried-and-true strains for most of my brews. I wish I brewed more often to try some different yeasts, but I just don't.

I ended up finding a used shirron. plenty of cooling capacity for ten gal batches. I have to use ice (pick your favorite method) here in TX in the summers though.

Good thinking - sure. Anyone else do it - probably. difference - more repeatable/predictable results. I for one never really care about a variance in the SG. It is what it is, and I don't think I've ever brewed something and later said, "dang, if only I wasn't off on the SG by 5 pts!" :D

I think Garrett's play calling has been highly suspect this year. He's shown a lot of promise in the past, but this year hasn't been his best. He's not ready to head coach an NFL team yet IMO. Now why the hell can't JJ get Cowher to come down here and win us a superbowl?
