Short answer - I don't think it matters.
But just the porter recipe w/out any bourbon or vanilla will take longer than 3 wks to mature. It's a big complex beer - you can't rush it too much. Give it at least 6 wks if you can. Or drink it green and it won't be nearly as good or worth it -...
I don't really know TBH, probably slightly different, but I'm sure you'll still greatly enjoy the end result. The oats are just to add a little mouthfeel and "creaminess". I've never really used flaked barley, so I speak to what they add.
The recipe isn't designed to be bitter at all. If anything it should lean towards malty. It may be that it still needs some aging. I bet it mellows out over the next few weeks if it lasts that long.
When you run the pump at full speed, it compacts the mash and turns it into a block of concrete. Slow the pump down and make sure the water to grain ratio is a little thinner to help w/ recirculation. No need to have it recirc at full speed.
I think MO is usually a great choice for a base malt, but it won't add any toasted flavor. You're already getting a good bit from this recipe, but if you wanted more, try upping the victory malt a little.
It's all good. I've got friends who don't like wheat beers, some don't like porters or stouts, and some don't do IPAs. I'm sure I've got friends who wouldn't dig nut browns either.
No hurt feelings here. Brew whatcha like!
Yeah, anytime you're adjusting for efficiency, just try to bump the base malt. Changing the specialty grains will affect the overall flavor of the beer.
Pitching on that yeast cake should be perfect.
It's been a bitter pill to swallow this year! The Cowboys have so much talent, but it's all been wasted. You need someone who can harness that, and motivate and discipline the players.
Hopefully Jones will do what's right and make wholesale changes and bring a top-notch head coach in there...
I think I'd brew it as-is and then add some extra strong coffee at bottling for flavor. We've done that with a porter before and it turned out really good.
Well, at least you like it! And you've got a good story to go along with it. Emphasize how it's definitely a one-of-a-kind beer, because you'll never make another one just like it again. ;)
Just use whatever fitting matches to the hose you get. I know it says 3/8" FNPT, but I'm pretty sure I've got the same one and it's a flared fitting. Might want to wait until you get it and then buy the matching male fitting to put on your manifold.
