Looking for brewery recommendations in Oregon and Washington State

I find Kulshan and Chuckanut Brewery have better beers than Boundary Bay in Bellingham; just my opinion...

How my brews landed me in the ER

I am not a doctor, but as a frequent "thrush getter", I can tell you with certainty that it's not from beer. There is a constant balance of yeast and bacteria in your mouth and throat. The bacteria usually keeps the yeast in check. However, if something upsets this balance, yeast can take over...

    185,000 BTUs

I second this. I have several burners, and this one is by far my favorite. It's always consistent, never scorches, and I've never had a boil over. When the regulator on this broke (I left it outside all winter like an idiot) I went and got a banjo burner. Damn that thing is hard to control...

Well I dumped my first batch of beer...

I've done the same thing; I think every brewer that kegs has it happen at least once. I accidentally closed my keezer lid on a picnic tap, the next day I found the keezer filled with about 4" of Apfelwine. A month's work completely down the drain (literally, unfortunately.) Now I double...

DIY Immersion Worth Chiller - Double Coil or Single?

My suggestion is single coil. The reason being is that I prefer to continue to stir the wort while the IC is cooling, which reduces cooling time and keeps the hops in suspension. With a secondary smaller coil it might cool faster, but would probably make it harder to stir. YMMV.

    Strange beer selection at costco

Same here; I've explained to my wife that I love Costco, but their Achille's heel is that they don't have any Coors. They do have great deals on local craft brews though, the one near me carries a Two Brothers variety 24 pack, for about 24.99. Not bad, but I like to buy my cheap crap beer in bulk.

    attn deadheads....

Heat destroys the effect of psilocybin, so you'd have to steep after brewing, hypothetically, of course. Don't ask me how I know this. :mug:

4 Liters for Yeast Starter?? Is this right?

Not to add confusion, but I've always shaken the starter up and pitched the entire thing. Never taken an OG reading of the starter either. No problems in over 15 years of brewing.

What I hope was the worst brewday of 2013

Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread. I find my boil off rates climb much higher the drier the air is (and it has been really dry here, as you know.) If it's windy, expect even more loss. Also, I know when I first started brewing, I calculated that my kettle lost about a gallon per...

What I hope was the worst brewday of 2013

I feel your pain; I'm not having much luck here in Chicago either. I started an all grain Surly Cynic clone from Northern Brewer last Friday, the 28th of December. I've brewed this clone several times (and it's a fantastic beer if you haven't brewed it before) and had no problems. Last...

    HomeBrew Black Friday?

I'm not sure if we're allowed to post non-sponsored links or not, but since this is a "blog" and isn't really selling anything - I always keep my eyes on http://www.homebrewfinds.com/ for good deals.

Most of my beers have a funny flavor HELP!

This. I think in general, people worry way too much about water chemistry. Don't mess with it unless you really know what you're doing! I am on well water and have an very complex filtration system from Culligan. My water still sucks. I would never drink it, let alone brew with it. It...
