    Favorite/Worst Cheap Beer?

PBR for cheap beer. For a medium cheap beer- Peter’s Brand Dutch Lager from Trader Joe’s. That’s actually my favorite camping/fishing beer.

Will try my first automated overnight mash with RAPT. Thoughts?

Yup. My Anvil (120v) is painfully slow so spargimg the night before means I can program it to boil when I wake up. I also put the grain basket in a bucket and in the morning it’s nice and cool so I can dump in the compost.

Will try my first automated overnight mash with RAPT. Thoughts?

It looks like a good plan. However, in the future you could mash and sparge in the evening, then set your equipment to boil in the morning. I do all my batches this way as it allows for more time w family. I have an Anvil Foundry and my wort sits overnight at usually 140f. I may have to top...

    Propylene Glycol Alginate

Ok I have a packet coming in the mail. Thanks @passedpawn I’ll probably add it to the keg for an upcoming session IPA. Unless I hear of a better time to add the PGA.

Anyone know if this lid will fit on an anvil fermenting bucket?

I don’t know but I’d give them a call. The few times I’ve ordered from them they were great. I had some random tubing size questions and they were very helpful.

What did I cook this weekend.....

Easiest dessert ever. Crème de brûlée mangos. Actually there’s no crème but the kids love it and it takes all of 30 seconds to make.

Made salmon sushi bake for dinner to use up some freezer stuff. Came out really good. Even the kiddo liked it.

What are your favorite apples from the store for making hard cider from apples?

I don’t think I’d use any grocery store apples for cider. This time of year, the apples you’d find at the store will have come from cold storage. This process involves gassing them w ethylene, nitrogen etc. There are really good single variety juices available at many stores, Fuji, honey crisp...

    The "Dear" , "Sincerely" thread

Dear YouTube Algorithm, I have neve been to a rodeo. I have never been to Germany. Why do you keep suggesting channels that display young German women in short dressses riding on top of mechanical bulls? Ok, ok so maaaaybe I clicked on it once or twice, but only out of concern for the bull’s...

What breweries to visit in Portland/Yakima

Mcmenamins are cool just to hang out and kill some time, especially if you’re in a group. Decent burgers and cool stuff to see. Agreed- The Kennedy School is my fave. I spent many evenings, years ago, in the principal’s office getting hammered. Portland also has lots of Brew n View theaters...

    Soup

First time making birria ramen. Won’t be the last. Similar taste profile to posole. Soup meals are severely underrated. Oh yeah, and easy too. I used leftover birria meat and broth and a few packs of cheap ramen (sans the flavor packet).

I noticed their dark mild by Machine House Brewery. I’ve never tried it but I’ve heard good things about it.

What breweries to visit in Portland/Yakima

The Horse Brass Saloon is the old school choice. According to their website they have five cask beers! It’s been a few years since I’ve been but I’m thinking a trip there is in my future. https://horsebrass.com/beer/

What breweries to visit in Portland/Yakima

I’ll second Breakside. They do a good job on a wide array of styles. Wayfinder is pretty good as well. There are a ton of other great breweries here, I’d look at what’s in the neighborhood of where you’ll be staying. If you’re into British beer, there’s a grip of places that serve from cask.

    Fishing!

No pics to share but this week I’ll have a chance to do some needed maintenance on my 16’ fishing boat. I’ll probably start the motors, give her a bath, check trailer bearings etc. Many of the mountain lakes around here are still closed from the winter. Hopefully get a lot of Kokanee blood on...
