    In Defense of a Secondary

I love buckets for lots of things. Bottling, holding sanitizer, crushing grain into, bulk grain storage, a chair... Just not fermenting. I think I just have a negative attitude towards them because the only batch I've ever done in a bucket got infected, which was probably my fault. Still, can't...

    Pumpkin Ale

Hmm, chocolate pumpkin does sound interesting. That's an off centered ale. : )

This has nothing to do with beer, I just wanted to quote you so you would see it. Where do you live in WV? I grew up in the Huntington area.

I mean that sounds good from a man point of view. Not sure she would take it so well.

    Pumpkin Ale

How much canned pumpkin do you use? I'm a 3 gallon guy as well.

Haha. I don't like buckets. If I wanted a bucket, I would spend $2.85 at Home Depot, drill out a hole for a grommet and airlock and call it a day. I like glass.

Lol. She's really a lovely woman that keeps me out of trouble. Just doesn't like beer or spending "unnecessary" money.

    Pumpkin Ale

I'm half considering just buying the 3 gallon BIAB Smashing Pumpkin kit from NB. As much as I like developing recipes, I assume theirs would be extremely comparable if not better than what I would come up with. Side note: I do a more traditional all grain method in 3 gallon batches, not BIAB...

    Pumpkin Ale

I'm going to be making a pumpkin ale (for the first time) soon so I can age it for the Halloween-Thanksgiving weeks. I'm pretty good at developing my own recipes. I was just wondering what I should use as a base recipe. I would guess Pale Ale? Maybe a Pumpkin Porter would be delicious. And I...

    Adding to a Kolch Kit?

I would say just leave it be. Northern Brewer kits are some of the best you can buy, and Kolsch is supposed to be a simple beer. And I would just use Safale US-05. I think you would be hard pressed to tell a difference in a blind taste test.

    Homebrew in the Shower

I have my morning coffee for two reasons. One, to kick start my brain, but number two, and more importantly, to jump start my colon. -Robin Williams

Worst Commercial Beer You've Ever Had?

The Beast Ice. Gives me chills just thinking about that aftertaste.

    Brew in a bag

Technically, BIAB is a one vessel mash/boil method. If you are talking about false bottoms, I would assume you are using second vessel for mashing. However, you can mash in a tun with a bag instead of a false bottom and it works fine. You will just need to alter your sparge method, unless you...

    Just starting - with Questions!

My next step was buying BeerSmith. It is extremely helpful in putting your own recipes together. If you know what you want your beer to end up being, BeerSmith can get you there (with some tinkering).

Breaking through a plateau in quality

I am a pretty new brewer, especially to all grain, so I wouldn't say I have hit a plateau yet, but there are things I work on every batch. 1. Temp control on my mash. 2. Proper aeration before pitching yeast. 3. Not drinking too much while making homebrew. 4. Sanitation.
