    Light IPA?

I used to brew IPAs exclusively until I came up with this. I like it just as much as my 7% IPAs and it's cheaper, faster to brew and has less alcohol and calories. 6 lbs. extra light pilsen extract .75 lbs. Crystal 40 Boil time: 15 minutes Hop schedule: .75 oz Galaxy (12.8% AA) @15 1...

Switched the fermentation vessel, now what?

I definitely didn't tighten the spigot enough; I'm always cautious not to overtighten it. I think I leaned the bucket on the spigot and that's what started it. Oh well. I figured a little extra oxygen at such an early stage wouldn't hurt anything. I just didn't know if the turbulence would...

Switched the fermentation vessel, now what?

So I brewed a batch of pale ale last night and I used a bucket with a spigot on it for the fermenter (yeah I know). Pitched the dry yeast as I normally do. This morning I woke up to the spigot leaking, so I gave it a turn and it started leaking even more. I quickly sanitized another bucket...

    Carapils vs. carahell

I have a blonde ale extract recipe that calls for 1 lb carapils for steeping grains and I happen to have 1 lb of carahell on hand. Will substituting make a big difference in the beer?

    Brown threads on cones

What are the brown threads on my hop cones? Should they be pulled off when I harvest?

Steeping grains for my extract IPA

I've brewed 7 or 8 IPAs in my short brewing career. My base recipe uses 8 lbs extra light DME and 1 lb crystal 40L for steeping. I started out with all amarillo as the hops and have tried to change just one ingredient with each brew, introducing Simcoe and Centennial into the mix in different...

Hops still good after being left out?

Literally like cheese? They definitely smell like hops, maybe cheese and hops, I can't tell.

Hops still good after being left out?

I left some hops out on the counter in my 70-75 degree basement for about a week. They were in the foil package they came in which was folded over tightly at the opening but not completely air-tight. Are they still good?

    Leaky bucket

I don't really "use" a gallon. I keep some Starsan mixed in a gallon milk jug. I dump that in, shake it and siphon it back to the gallon jug to sanitize the siphon. I pitched the wort mid-transfer once and it seemed to take a lot longer to start fermenting than it did after I started using...

    Leaky bucket

I do aerate it by splashing it in when I siphon it. The shake after 30 minutes was also get the yeast off the foam and into the wort. Maybe it's time I started hydrating before I pitch, but that was one more step and a chance for contamination that I've avoided so far.

    Leaky bucket

I sprinkle the yeast, let it sit on top for 30 minutes, then shake it. I can't image I'm the only one doing it that way because the only way I would've gotten that idea is from someone here :)

    immersion chiller

I made my chiller with 20' of 5/8" OD tubing and it chills 5 gallons in 10-15 minutes depending on the temperature of the water. It was a bear to bend, but it chills very quickly. I also used vinyl tubing and hose clamps. The same size vinyl fits over the 5/8" OD and the hose fittings.

    Leaky bucket

It's a problem if your process of pitching yeast includes shaking the bucket.

    Leaky bucket

I recently bought a plastic bucket from a major online supplier to use as a primary fermenter. On brew day I put a gallon of Starsan in, capped it, and gave it a shake. I got drenched. Tried a different lid, same thing. Luckily I had a different bucket to use because I was already mid-boil...

    Steeping ahead of time

Steeping and boiling in parallel is an interesting idea, but I'm more interested in the feasibility of doing them on separate days without affecting the end result.

    Steeping ahead of time

For an extract brew, does anyone think there would be a problem steeping the grains the day before doing the boil and storing the result overnight in the refrigerator?

    Simarennial IPA

I've been loving the Simcoe-Amarillo combination in my IPAs and just purchased some Centennial to experiment with. Here's the extract recipe I'm considering. Comments appreciated. Full boil. 8 lbs. DME 1 lb. Crystal 40 1.25 Warrior (17.5%) @ 60 .16 Simcoe @ 20 .16 Amarillo @ 20 .16...

How to plant a rhizome with long shoots

I just got a rhizome in the mail and it has 3-4 shoots on it that are about 4" long. Should I plant it with the tops of the shoots just below the surface of the soil or with them sticking out?
