    Brew Bucket vs BrewMaster?

I think I read somewhere though that just taping the temp probe of a temp controller to the side of the brew bucket does not differ significantly from using the probe in a thermowell.

    Efficiency drop since using pump?

I'm not blaming the pump, just asking the question. I can't imagine why it would go down from using it either but it seems like it may have been from forgetting the step of stirring after the mash to release the sugars from the grain. I would go straight to recirculating with the pump. To...

    Hydrometer vs refractometer

I love using the refractometer over the hydrometer. I don't claim to understand the differences but if you can use a calculator to get to +- .002 when measuring your FG are you really that concerned? It's great just pulling a little of beer from the fermenter in a small glass to check the...

Best bru n water profile for brown porter?

I hadn't thought about this before but after reading some more in the Bru'n water instructions, I can play with the water to grist ratio. I've been brewing using a 1.3 to 1 ratio. If I up that a bit using 5 gallons for the mash rather than 4, the mash ph will move more into an ideal range. Would...

Best bru n water profile for brown porter?

I’m actually brewing the same recipe from the Zymurgy magazine a couple months ago. Brun water has my mash ph estimated to be at 5.05 without any salt additions. Is there something I should be doing to try and raise the ph a bit? Can I add all my water additions to the sparge water? It isn’t...

Adding Coconut, Cacao Nibs and a Vanilla Bean

Thanks for the advice! Have you ever used one of the stainless steel hop filters for the coconut? I'm guessing a lb of toasted coconut likely isn't going to fit into the stainless mesh filter.

Adding Coconut, Cacao Nibs and a Vanilla Bean

I’m looking to brew this recipe next week actually. My question though is around transferring to a secondary vessel. I’ve always used one vessel in all my batches. Is it imperative to rack to a secondary vessel to condition on the coconut and cocoa? Has anyone just added to the...

    Brewing with Coconut

Wondering, is it absolutely necessary to transfer to secondary? Of all the batches I've made thus far I've left in one vessel for the duration of the fermentation and conditioning. I'm planning on brewing the Choconut Porter that was featured in the latest Zymurgy edition and if there aren't any...

    Efficiency drop since using pump?

I only run the pump during the mash to vorlauf. Otherwise it sits untouched for the full hour. I would probably let it run for anywhere from 5 - 10 minutes and generally at a pretty slow speed. I haven't been stirring prior to vorlaufing so maybe that is the issue. I honestly don't remember if...

    Efficiency drop since using pump?

Last two batches my efficiency has suffered and I’ve missed my OG by about .010. The main difference is I’ve started using a chugged pump to vorlauf. I batch sparge. I can’t imagine the pump would be the reason for the drop but I’m not doing anything else differently. Any thoughts?

    NEIPA Dry hopping

I brewed a similar recipe with a slightly different grain bill. I added a 6 oz dry hop of 3 oz citra, 2 oz mosaic and 1 oz el dorado all at one shot about maybe a week after brewing and 5 days before kegging. Came out with a great aroma and a great taste. Also used the Omega DIPA yeast with a...

    Quick Question : Pumpkin Ale

I'm brewing a pumpkin ale this weekend. 5 gallon batch and planned on using 5 tsp of Cinnamon based on all the articles I've found online. Seems like a big difference between 5 and .5. 5 tsp Cinnamon 1 tsp Ginger .75 tsp Nutmeg .5 tsp Cardamom

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

For those that don't cold crash, have you had issues with the first pours out of the keg? I tried to pour a glass yesterday a day after kegging to see the carbonation level (set at 30 PSI) and the beer looked like split pea soup and tasted very harsh. Like eating a hop. I'm assuming from...

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

Brewed this almost two weeks ago and added the 6 oz dry hop Sunday before leaving on a business trip. Planning on kegging tomorrow or Saturday but the dry hops are all still sitting on top of the beer. Ferm fridge smells great! But wondering, anyone have any best practice of avoiding...

Carbonation impacted by temp diff in keezer?

I just finally installed a computer fan in my keezer when I realized that the temperature near the top of the keezer was up near or above 50 degrees. I have the temp controller set to 37 and the probe zip tied to a soda can sitting on the hump of the keezer. Anyway, I've felt that my beers...

    Hop storage question

When buying hops a few days before brew day do people typically go through the trouble of sealing them and freezing them for a few days or just let them ride in the fridge until brew day?

    Bulk hops storage.

I just purchased a vacuum sealer and bags. I did see on theElectricBrewery.com that he makes vertical seals in the bags so that you can separate into smaller portions of only what you need and not have to worry about resealing or putting in a different bag.

Anyone have a Rye IPA recipe?

Not sure how this will show in the post but I thought this beer came out really nice. Got the recipe originally from https://www.homebrewtalk.com/showthread.php?t=522728 Would definitely recommend giving it a shot. Ingredients Amt Name Type # %/IBU 1.00 Items Campden Tablets (Mash 60.0 mins)...

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

Would like to brew this sometime this month. Couple of questions: 1. Is there a specific benefit to dry hopping with two separate bursts? I understand there is an idea of some kind of biotransformation when dry hopping during the latter part of active fermentation. Is that the sole reason for...
