If you are going to grow hops, please do it right

Some really great advice here. I'm lucky enough to live in N.Idaho one of the best places on earth to grow hops. My wife is an avid gardner and just purchased a $300 composter and I said WHAT! After she explained it to me it made sense, plus now I'll have some nice compost for my hop plants...

    Mash Tun Filter Choice?

Or you can try BIAB if you have a big enough pot. That's what I did and it wasn't very complicated at all, just make sure you have a good thermometer.

    Carboy question

I learned my lesson the hard way. Now it's the 1" tube in the carboy when I start fermentation. You can switch back to a sanatized airlock after 5-6 days or so if you want.

looking for most cost-effective way to get at least 7% alcohol

Buy a 50 lb bag of 2 row barley, if you look around you can get it fairly cheap. Do some research, google BIAB. I can make 2 cases of a simple good ale or amber beer for around $10-$12. You can reuse your yeast, do the research. You can grow your own hops.

Should I let the priming sugar liquid cool before pouring it in the bottling bucket?

I add it pretty warm. I put about 1/3 of the wort in the fermenter and add half the priming sugar mixture, after 2/3 of my wort is added I add the rest then just pour in the rest of the wort. I use 2 cups of boiled water to 5oz. corn sugar (5 gallon batch).

Strange but true home brew story!

So you traded some rhizomes for some beer and $20. That's what I make of it.
