"Vinator" bottle rinser - Any good?

Another vote for "that one." I use it all the time when bottling. Just be sure the bottles are well rinsed when you store them away, and use "that one" to sanitize them the day of bottling. Haven't had a bad bottle yet!

Oregon Any Brewers in Coos Bay, Bandon, Reedsport?

Hi Ohmus, Welcome to Coos Bay! I've met a couple of times with Beechnut, who is an accomplished brewer, and would love to start a new club, if there's enough interest. Send me a PM when you get to town and I'll buy you a beer at 7 Devils, our local brewery. And Beerswimmer, It'd by my pleasure...

Dumping Yeast Slurry on the Compost Pile???

As a relative newbie who'd never seen this thread before, I appreciate the dredge. Anybody who remembers the original post needs to take up a new hobby. May I recommend brewing?

Dry hopped too early, should I dry hop again?

Thanks, all, for your kind replies. Live and (hopefully) learn!

Dry hopped too early, should I dry hop again?

I used dry yeast, Safale S-04, and fermented at about 64 degrees, no starter. It took off immediately, much more quickly than any beer I've made before. After I added the dry hops, it took off again, and got very, very cloudy. After a week, I (probably not intelligently) attempted to cold crash...

Dry hopped too early, should I dry hop again?

I'm using a six-gallon carboy, no secondary. It is because I'm trying to avoid oxidation that I haven't used a hydrometer yet. I have to use a wine thief to get out the sample, and then do it again a day later to check to see if the ABV is the same (that's correct, isn't it?) I was hoping to...

Dry hopped too early, should I dry hop again?

I started a batch of Northern Brewer Ferocious IPA on April 27th. It fermented ferociously for about a week, but kept on working appreciably for almost a month. On May 27th it had slowed down to approximately one bubble per minute in the airlock, so I added the dry hops, thinking I'd bottle in a...

ugh, found an earwig in my mug

Anybody who's 75 and lived to tell the tale ain't no chicken! And my second hobby is gardening, so I can say from experience that the occasional earwig in your diet won't kill you.

Am I the only one who enjoys bottling?

I enjoy bottling, but I'm retired and have plenty of spare time. I enjoy seeing the row of iridescent, freshly-capped bottles build up on the counter like so many jewels in a dragon's hoard. Kegs, and I own several from my wine-making days, remind me of the muffler on the Minneapolis Moline...

Small amount of mold in LME. Should I dump the brew?

Yes, thanks, lesson learned! If I'm going to be storing LME for any length of time in the future, I'll make space in the freezer for it.

Small amount of mold in LME. Should I dump the brew?

Thanks for the advice, DuncB. Brewn@KopperKat's link contains the following paragraph that is applicable: "If you do experience minor molding at the top of your extract, you can usually salvage it by simply scraping the top layer off. This is because the mold actually does not grow in the malt...

Small amount of mold in LME. Should I dump the brew?

Yesterday I started an extract ale kit that I bought from a brew supply store back in November of last year. I steeped the grain, brought the liquid to a boil, then opened the six lb bucket of LME and prepared to dump it in. But surprise, there was a spot of mold on top of the LME. On closer...

Do ales from an extract kit need a diacetyl rest?

Doh! Why didn't I think of that?!? (Don't tell me, it wouldn't be polite of you...)

Do ales from an extract kit need a diacetyl rest?

The heating wrap is temp regulated; I got it from Northern Brewer, and it includes an LED readout that tells the current temp of the carboy and the set temperature. It has a sensor that I've attached to the outside of the carboy and covered with a layer of styrofoam. I use the current temp on...

Do ales from an extract kit need a diacetyl rest?

Yikes! I just turned it down on the stout I'm brewing. I'll turn it back up post haste! Thanks!

Do ales from an extract kit need a diacetyl rest?

I've been reading Papazian's "Complete Joy of Home Brewing" and Palmer's "How to Brew" in an attempt to make some sense of kit instructions, and I am now suffering from information overload. Both books give a cursory overview of the diacetyl "butterscotch" flavor, but neither book goes into the...
