Beer may be good for your health!

According tothe findings of this meta-analysis of the existing literature on the subject, a misclassification of former drinkers as non-drinkers accounts for the J-curve: https://nutritionfacts.org/video/Is-It-Better-to-Drink-Little-Alcohol-Than-None-at-All/

Beer may be good for your health!

This is true, to a point; there are always corner cases like the 95-yr-old guy who's smoked a pack a day for seventy-five years with no apparent ill effects. But no one doubts that smoking is bad for health and longevity. There are patterns that can be tracked and identified, and the effect of...

Beer may be good for your health!

A slew of recent studies have been published indicating that all that intestinal flora and fauna is good for not only our physical well-being, but our mental well-being as well, and that got me wondering if my daily drink or two (who's counting) of beer might be bad for my intestinal microbiome...

There has to be a better way to drain BIAB over a kettle at mashout without using a hoist

If it's not impolite to ask, Mr. Stout, when do you anticipate getting the BIAB Rocket on the market? Some of us are mechanically disinclined, if not downright inept. (Speaking from personal experience.)

    Clean Bottles

I use madscientist451's method, but I start by triple-rinsing my empties with hot water (one of the first tips I picked up after joining this board). They've always cleaned up nicely and been ready for the next brew. I brewed a batch recently that left a slight film on the bottom of each bottle...

    Please, pronounce it "wert"!

An interesting English language footnote, as long as we're tossing worts around: In 1066 the Normans (French speaking people) invaded England and took over the high positions in society. They relegated the natives (Saxons) to the menial labor. The Saxons raised Sheep, Pigs, Cows, etc. But when...

    Homebrew supplies in southern Oregon

There is a homebrew store in Winston, just outside of Roseburg. It's a little limited, but I've picked up some necessities, grain, and extracts there. Here's their website: Beer Brewing, Roseburg, OR - Harvest

Black IPA thing of the past?

I'm fairly new at this, and still mostly an extract brewer, but my favorite brew is Northern Brewer's "Ace of Spades IPA." I've brewed it three times, and every bottle was delicious! As with all such things, de gustibus non est disputandem. (Latin for, "If you don't like this, your tastebuds...

Question about excess foaming upon opening bottle

You didn't mention who's kit you were brewing. I've made several Northern Brewer kits, and if you request sugar, they always supply a 5 oz. bag. But in the fine print of their bottling directions, they usually say to add 2/3rds cup of sugar to the bottling bucket. The 2/3rds cup is...

Is there any way to figure FG after adding conditioning sugar?

It is very likely that you are correct. In fact, the OG was measured with a friend's refractometer, and the post-sugar-addition measurement was with my cheapo hydrometer, so there may be some disparity. The brew sat in the primary for a month, and in a secondary (I know, I know...) for two weeks...

Is there any way to figure FG after adding conditioning sugar?

I don't think so. The brew fermented prodigiously, moving vast quantities of foam through the blow-off tube for several days. And if the FG was 1.06, Brewheads.com's specific gravity calculator says an OG of 1.059@67F and an FG of 1.06@68F would amount to an ABV of negative 0.16%. That would...

Is there any way to figure FG after adding conditioning sugar?

My brain short-circuited again, and I siphoned my wort into the bottling bucket with the conditioning sugar before I remembered to check FG. Here are the particulars: An all-grain IPA from a regional brew shop. The OG was 1.059@67F. The ersatz FG was 1.06@68F. ("Wait," I said, "That can't...

    Room temperature homebrew...

My local hero, a guy who runs a little shop that stocks exotic beers from all over the country, (brews from Vermont on the coast of Oregon, e.g.) tells me, "You should never drink a stout cold; you should keep it at room temperature, and pour it into an ice cold glass. That way you don't lose...
