    Yeast 'active' in the vial?

A vial/smackpack alone is not enough for anything over 1.040 IMHO. As for the "two vials", it depends on how old they were. Starters are easy. Boil up 8oz of LME in 2L of water for 15 minutes, chill it down to ~75ºf, put it into a flask or some other container that you can cap with aluminum...

    so am I an Ahole?

You committed yourself to this woman, and now you want to welch on the deal because you want to lay around in your boxers all day, drinking yourself silly and playing xbox? Friend, not only are you an a-hole, you're an immature a-hole. You're 27 years old. It's time to grow up. Now, if she's...

Why, if I'm an AMERICAN living in AMERICA do I have to...

Because the signs are usually visually aided as well. A stop sign isn't a white box with black lettering, it's a big red octagon. It's a lot easier to translate these isolated words than to grasp the actual english language in such a fashion that you can read and answer whole sentences in...

Why, if I'm an AMERICAN living in AMERICA do I have to...

Exarcly. If I went to France and got a job as a barista, you think it'd make sense for me to learn "cafe au lait", etc. I can understand if you don't yet know the whole goddamned english language, but if you haven't even taken the time to learn the singular words/phrases for the job you work...

    Yeast 'active' in the vial?

I don't think there's anything to ferment in there, unless the storage media had staved it off in transit somehow. Probably just a matter of it releasing CO2 and expanding when you warmed it up. What to make of it: nothing. Your bigger problem may be that you apparently didn't make a starter...

    Rain Barrels...

Anyone know of a relatively inexpensive (~$100) pump that will move this water uphill?

    What would you serve?

I'd send both of these assbags packin, and instead invite over some REAL victims of the "militarization of mayberry". Hell, even if he just invited over the folks who had their dogs shot and killed when local SWAT jerkoffs hit the wrong house, he could fill the WH ballroom. But no...some black...

    Yuengling

It's ok in a pinch. Sort of halfway between BMC and craft brew. If, for instance, I'm out of town, on my way to a party or someone's house and I need to grab some beer, and all the convenience store has is that and BMC, I'm picking the Y. But these days, all but the dumpiest ghetto marts seem to...

Is it even possible that the fermentation could have started and finished in 1 day?

Yeah, good luck wit dat. :o My experience has always been that stalled fermentations don't restart by stirring, etc. YMMV, but I suspect you'll have to dump it onto another cake to finish it out.

Is it even possible that the fermentation could have started and finished in 1 day?

I've never had one go that fast unless it's an existing cake. It's entirely possible, of course, but it's also quite possible that it's stalled...which, when you're blowing off all that happy yeast through the blowoff tube, isn't unlikely.

For an OG of 1.084 do I need a starter?

It's not just about alcohol content, it's about the fact that higher starting gravity means more osmotic pressure on the cells, which hurts their viability. That's the reason why, when trying to reach higher ABV's, like 15%+, people will often start with a relatively low OG, wait for that to...

    Forgot my 5.2

I agree with sundowner. Mash pH is really not as big of a concern as RA/chloride:sulfate ratios. My water pH is relatively high, and I've used 5.2 stabilizer in pilseners before without getting the "harsh, minerally" flavor that cefmel is referring to. Dropping 300 bills on a damn pH meter, when...

    Need hops and yeast suggestions

You're looking at about 14 srm, OG of 1.055 (assuming 75% eff)...I'd say shoot for an irish reddish ale. try this for a hopping schedule: .5oz EKG @ 60m .5oz Wil @ 60m .5oz Wil @ 15m .5oz EKG @5m Yields an IBU of 22. As for yeast...what do you have access to? There are a million choices. If...

    Forgot my 5.2

What would be the main consequence of forgetting the buffer - a drop in efficiency - was obviously not a problem. So the only solution I see is to dump the batch.
