    First no-chill batch disaster

Nice to know! So now the only issue I have is all the trub that went in, but I'm not really concerned about that. Should settle out just fine when I rack to secondary or the bottling bucket.

I'm physically ill with jealousy for all you guys now

    First no-chill batch disaster

Good thing I Sanitized then too. Thanks! Anyway, just pitched 30 mins ago (4 days after boil) and already have airlock activity (I know, I know, not a ferm. indicator). Mashing second no-chill batch right now

    First no-chill batch disaster

Mostly research from the AussieHomeBrewer Wiki and forum: But I hardly ever take anything on the intarwebz at face value. Gotta work through it myself first and make sure it makes sense to me hence I sanitized the cubes anyway - there just wasn't any benefit in not doing it.

    First no-chill batch disaster

Yeah, plastic. It's an electric boiler a la the australian Bucket O' Death. It's a 50 litre drum with 4 electric kettle elements in it, 2x 2400W and 2x 2200W. I'm sure it's gonna come out just peachy as long as I managed to avoid an infection somewhere along the line. Might not be the...

    First no-chill batch disaster

...but it had nothing to do with the no-chill. Finished up a good, solid 90 minute boil and AS i started whirlpooling I knocked the inside of the ball-valve tap on my plastic boiler promptly knocking the tap out of the boiler causing the wort to begin spewing everywhere. I had already...

    Exploring "no chill" brewing

I'm doing my first batch of no-chill this weekend. I'll be doing it side by side with a chilled version to compare. I'll take to our next brewclub meeting and get the BJCP guys input on a blind taste-test and see what they come up with. Doing a SMaSH with pale malt only (Pilsner was too...

    Looking for cheap recipes

I found this Summit SMaSH Beer recipe which looks like it'll work perfectly for my needs right now. Just going to change the hops out with the Southern Promise ones and adjust the hop schedule so the IBU's are similar. Also might throw some Dry Orange Skin in there to try get the tangerine feel...

    Looking for cheap recipes

hehe I didn't actually mean that the recipes themselves must be cheap, just the ingredients :tank: So I've decided to go with a couple batches of Ed's Haus Pale as it's cheap and gives me room to buy bulk grains for experiementing. I'm going to try a couple "vanilla" batches i.e. following...

    Looking for cheap recipes

If memory serves the southern promise is around 11.5% AA. Im definitely going to look at reusing yeast, thanks. As for making my own specialty grains, that might be an idea for now. Something just to get some different colour and flavour in the beer while i try nail the all grain...

    Looking for cheap recipes

Ive just finished building my new all grain setup and want to brew quite a bit while tweaking the process to try get my efficiency up. SWMBO doesnt approve of me spending lots on beer stuff so i need to find some cheap recipes that i can go from grain to bottle quite quickly. I need to stock...

    Man, I love Apfelwein

Just ordered the yeast. Gonna use Lalvin EC-1118, can't get the montrachet here (JHB, South Africa) so we'll see how it comes out. I'm going to pitch 10g in, should I just go ahead and make a starter according to John Palmer? (How to Brew - By John Palmer - Preparing Yeast and Yeast Starters)

    Bottle washer and sanitizer project

What about replacing the copper with pvc tubing and using garden sprinklers for the jets in the bottles? Should be a lot cheaper than copper and no need to beat the copper into submission. Also no soldering. I would also include a drain plug. Big up for this idea, its gone straight onto...

    Weak bottle or incomplete fermentation?

My current batch has just given me 1 bottle where the bottom separated from the top. The top half of the bottle was lying on the other side of the room though, so pretty sure it was an explosion. So far it's the only 1 from the batch. I did bottle the batch slightly early though, hydrometer...
