    So who's brewing this weekend?

Starting a Vienna-based brown ale. It's a slight variant on a Vienna almost-SMaSH (DMaDH?) that has worked well a couple of times.

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Water on to heat. A variation of Biermuncher's Centennial Blonde: there's a slightly higher proportion of Vienna and I'm using Chinook and Amarillo rather than Centennial and Cascade.

First 5 gallon all-grain brew: some issues

Closing in on a year later... Sorry for the bump, but I wanted to drop in and say thank you again to everyone who helped me here. This thread made a massive difference in my return to brewing and without it I wouldn't be brewing nearly as much or as well as otherwise. I went a long time...

Why is no Maris Otter grown in the USA?

This is my most commonly used base malt and I love it. Unfortunately I don't have enough experience (or sophistication of taste) to say how it compares to others.

Blonde Ale Centennial Blonde (Simple 4% All Grain, 5 & 10 Gall)

I've brewed two recent batches of this, one a partial mash which is just about ready to drink and an all-grain one that is working through the process and tasting good as it goes. I think it's going to be a hit this summer. I'm looking to make a third (and maybe fourth) batch, but want to mix...

What hop varieties are you adding this year?

It was early in my return to brewing and everything was very variable at that stage. We used them in an American Pale Ale, and it was OKish but not great. But that's a style we still don't have a good version of. Come this season, we'll have a lot more established recipes that will let us...

What hop varieties are you adding this year?

We have some of an unknown variety that have been doing well in the three years since we planted them (we weren't brewing for much of that, but used them a bit this last year). This year we added some Mount Hood to our annual mail-order gardening order.

    Irish Stout Summer Stout

Brewing this now, thanks for sharing the recipe. Between the note that 1.050 is high for the ingredients (which I didn't see before I bought the grain) and my only having 6oz of oats on hand when I thought I had more, I'm thinking about adding some DME to give it a little boost. I'm also using...

Bittering hops question for British-style ales

Thanks everyone, I'm happy that my hope/expectation was correct. I said magnum because I had that on hand. Brewing now with 0.25oz of that instead of an ounce of Fuggle. There is 1.5oz of EKG/Fuggle to come later in the boil (and all of the recipes I'm thinking of subbing into have at least...

Bittering hops question for British-style ales

I have a few recipes that I like that use 1oz of Fuggle or EKG at 60mins as the bittering hop. How much difference would it make to use 0.25oz of Hallertau Magnum (or whatever the appropriate weight is to get the same alpha acid)? The advantages aren't huge---I'd save a couple of dollars per 5...

Oatmeal Stout Best Laid Plans [Oatmeal Stout]

Brewing this right now. Only changes are CTZ for Galena and WY1098 as the yeast. I've been excited to try this for a little while, thanks for sharing it.

    British-style rye beer?

Thanks all, great comments and ideas. I deliberately chose the least IBUish from the 4%ers I've enjoyed, but maybe that number should go up a bit. But the comments about mild and darkness make me think that tweaking a dark mild recipe might be a better starting point. This is 100% a style...

    British-style rye beer?

Any leads on such a thing? Anyone brewed one? My recent successes have been British styles (usually 4% ABV, +/- 1; mild, best,...) and an American rye that I really loved. So I figured, why not do both at once? Taking a recent successful Best Bitter and subbing in 2lb of malted rye for the...

Historical Beer: Kentucky Common "Kiss Yer Cousin" Rye Kentucky Common Ale

Given this version a first try and I'm very happy. I'm not sure I've ever had a rye beer before, certainly not one where the rye is so powerful. I assume there must be commercial rye beers out there that are heavy on the rye? My plan was to get the ingredients for the original recipe on my...

Seems like many are returning to home brewing....

Another data point checking in. My reason for stopping was a house move. The stuff ended up in boxes in the basement and it took a long time (~4yrs) to get over the inertia and start up again a month or two ago. But since starting up I've been hooked to a greater extent than I ever was before.

How many gallons brewed in 2019!

4993 + 5 gallons strong stout = 4998 ...teeing up the 5000 mark for someone.

First 5 gallon all-grain brew: some issues

I didn't see that checkbox, but I worked out how to have it added at the last minute of the boil. It changed the IBUs but not the efficiency. That's good to hear RM-NM. I entered the best bitter that I made last time and that overshot too, but less so. Efficiency of 83%. So it seems...
