    Grainfather!!

Hi. Yes, I've taken mine out to clean and replace the little plastic collars on the silicone connections with worm type hose clamps. Very easy to do. Simply squeeze the stainless cover top & bottom to unlatch and remove. The pump is held in with two screws and the silicone connectors. Once you...

About to add oak and vanilla to a stout... do I secondary?

Hi. I've done it both ways for my Bourbon Barrel Stouts. The first time, I used a secondary because that was the conventional wisdom. The beer came out great, and it worked fine. The second and third times, I just added the soaked oak chips/cubes (and the bourbon of course) directly into the...

    Grainfather!!

Sounds like you're all over it, so this is a real puzzler. I'm guessing you're conditioning your grain with 2-3% water (by weight?) I usually condition mine ~24 hours and mill just before doughing in. I can't believe that conditioning the grain would result in this. My only other suggestion...

    Grainfather!!

Everything you've done sounds like it should not result in a lower efficiency. If anything, it should be better. My Schmidling Malt Mill is set to default 0.045," I always precondition my grain, and I also use a SS steel screen at the bottom. My BH efficiencies are usually in the 80s, and...

    Sanitizer? and some other questions

Yes, it should be safe to use as a sterilizer, but I would still recommend getting some Starsan, and mixing up a small amount to keep in a spray bottle. Like I said before, the contact time of Starsan is only two minutes compared to 4-5 for the Chemipro Oxy. Ed :mug:

    Sanitizer? and some other questions

Hi. When I looked at the link, that's what I saw too until I read further into the description below. Here's what they said: "Purpose Chemipro OXI is intended for cleaning and sterilising all brewing equipment in an effective and environmentally friendly manner with no rinsing required!" I hear...

    Sanitizer? and some other questions

Hi. Bummer! I've had that happen before. If your beer was actively fermenting, chances of infection are reduced, but still certainly possible. If it happens again (and you don't have a replacement stopper,) just put some sanitized foil crimped over the mouth of the carboy. CO2 from fermentation...

    Sanitizer? and some other questions

Hi. Good job on your conversion to AG. Here are how I would answer your questions: 1. I read the product information of the Chemipro Oxy, and it certainly seems like it can be used for both cleaning and sanitizing. I would say that 4-5 minute contact time seems rather long compared to Iodophor...

    Grainfather!!

I think the GF tool is giving you the option to use the default value or enter one for yourself. For instance, I know my boil off rate is 2qts/hr on my 120v (US) system, so if I want my boil off plus trub allowance of 1 qt to give me 5.5 gallons into the fermenter, I'll enter 6.25 gals. Hope...

    Darkening Malt

Hi Erik. If you're just looking for color but not flavor, try Sinamar. It's fairly inexpensive and will definitely darken your brew. Ed :mug:

    Carbonation level of kegged beer

^^^True this! Here's 101...set and forget. I set mine to 12-15psi and leave it alone as long as I can stand it. By week three, it's usually nicely carbed and ready to drink. If you're impatient, by the time it's really good...it's gone! Ed :mug:

what are you guys using for heating in your chambers

Just make sure the one you get is rated for "moist" heat. In other words, the pad itself (not the cloth cover) should be waterproof. Normally, it won't get wet anyway, but why take chances? Ed :mug:

what are you guys using for heating in your chambers

+1^^^ this. The old style doesn't have an auto-cutoff switch. Mine is waterproof and I just set the Fermonster or bucket right on top of the pad in my chest freezer ferm chamber. I set the pad to low/med and control with the heat side of my STC-1000+. Since the Fermenting Vessel (FV) is on top...

    Temp Controller Overview

+++1 BrunDog! For a few years now, I've found the "sweetspot" for my thermowell to be about halfway into the wort and 2" in from the side of the FV (fermenting vessel.) This buffers the over/undershoots problem of having the probe in the center of the liquid because of "thermal inertia"...

    Grainfather!!

Unless you have exceptionally cool/cold groundwater, I think you're going to be stuck with warmer than pitch temperature wort into the fermenter. I'll play around with the flow rate and try to get is as cool as possible, but I usually wind up just putting the FV into my fermentation chamber and...

    Grainfather!!

+1^^^ this. Makes it much easier! ++1^^^ this too! My MaltMill is set to about 0.045" and I always condition my grain. I'm getting close to the same efficiencies and never a stuck sparge. Ed :mug:

    Grain and Mice

Yep. I use two things...a 4" paint brush (new and clean) and a shop vac. When I'm done milling my grain, I take it out into the driveway (so I don't get dust in the garage,) and brush down the mill, getting between the rollers, and into the nooks & crannies. Then I give it a good once over with...

    Grain and Mice

Hi. I also store my grain in the garage. I use the Ziploc Weathershield totes for my grain. I basically use two sizes...the 60qt, which will hold over 70# of unmilled grain, and the 44qt, which will hold right at 50-55# of grain. You can get opaque or clear and they're usually <$15/ea. They have...
