    Grainfather!!

+1 ^^^ this. If you do a good cleaning of your GF after each brew, you don't need to do it all the time. But once every 10-15 or so brews, you should do a detailed cleaning of your GF. This should include removing the Graincoat/Reflectix (if you use it); thermowell & filter bulkhead fittings...

    Grainfather!!

Hi. Try removing the ball & spring from the check valve and running pump again. Sometimes, the little nipple on the return pipe/CFC doesn't push the ball in all the way. At least you can check whether the pump works. In any case, I hope you get your GF up and running soon. Ed :mug:

    Grainfather!!

Hi. Coincidentally, that was my post about sewing the cap in place as well as using a SS hose clamp on the filter. Bottom line, it works great! One of my brew buddies also has a GF, and he's done the same thing. The process is easy. I used food safe Silicone to seal the rubber insert to the...

    Grainfather!!

Welcome back! Good to hear you're already brewing with your GF. I don't have the CF, so I don't have anything to offer. Kegging is the bomb, and once you start, you'll wish you'd done it sooner. Good to have you aboard! Ed :mug:

    Death by Coconut Clone

Hi. Thanks for the clarification. Have you tried brewing that recipe yet? Like I said in my earlier post #28, I changed mine up and didn't use any "real" coconut for batch #2. It came out really good, and for batch #3, I'll go with the Apex Coconut chocolate extract and skip both the coconut and...

    Grainfather!!

Hi. Here are some previous posts on that very question! Ed :mug: Note: I updated link from original post.

    Grainfather!!

Hi. That makes sense. Unless you have a loft of grain bits in the wort, it shouldn't clog your CFC (when you mash normally, the pump is running anyway to recirculate, so why not run through the CFC?) You may want to remove the spring and ball from the valve, just in case. If you're willing to...

    Grainfather!!

Hi. The short answer is yes, but I personally wouldn't do it. One of the steps before using the CFC is to run boiling wort through it for about 10 minutes to sanitize it before chilling the wort. How would you do that with mash temp wort? I know you could argue that the wort after the mash will...

    Grainfather!!

Why?!?! The Grainfather has a 24 month warranty. If the heating element "takes a crap 6-12 months in," then you get it fixed under warranty. There's no need to drill a hole in it and do a bubba mod. The beauty of the GF's hidden heating element is the ease of cleaning the boiler body. If you...

    Grainfather!!

Hi. You may want to reconsider wrapping the filter. If it clogs, you'll have no choice but to knock it off, or drain the kettle to unclog it. I suggest you may want to try (if you don't already do so,) conditioning your grain with 2-3% (by weight) of water misted and mixed into the grain before...

    Grainfather!!

Hi. I think you'll be very happy with your decision. I bought mine from Homebrew Supply, but I suspect the warranty works without regard from where you bought it. If you have any questions, give them a call and ask them outright. They're a good company and I'm sure they'll take care of you...

    Death by Coconut Clone

@jdauria . Thanks, but I didn't see any quantities/descriptions for the coconut (toasted, roasted, ?) or cacao (nibs, raw, roasted, ?) Was that missing in the original recipe? Ed :mug:

    Grainfather!!

+1 ^^^ this. I'll occasionally scrape the bottom, but not because I have to. I imagine if you don't use a hop basket/bag, then gunk would accumulate on the bottom and possible create the "overheating" issue (which trips the reset.) I use a hop basket/bag just because I don't want to deal with...

    Death by Coconut Clone

Hi. I also use Brewer's Friend and would be happy to look it over if you shared your recipe (I'm also RedlegEd on BF as well.) BTW, which beer was it? Ed :mug:

    Grainfather!!

Hi. Congratulations on your first brew using the GF! I hope that was the only issue you had. The way I do it is to pull my conversion sample after I finish my sparge, the grain basket is pretty much done dripping, and I've taken it off and put it into a clean plastic oil pan to catch any...

    Death by Coconut Clone

Wow, now that stuff is strong! I checked their website, and they recommend starting at 0.20% in beer and adjust to taste. If my math is correct, that's 1.28 oz for a five gallon batch (128 oz * 5 gal * 0.002.) I'll definitely give them a try next time and forego the coconut and cacao nibs...

    Death by Coconut Clone

Hi. I just kegged another batch last weekend. Although it's been chillin' in the fermentation chamber for about three weeks @35°F, it still needs to age and carbonate some more. A sample pulled last night was good and very promising. The main things I did different on this batch were: Did not...

    the Best Agave?

Hi. I split a batch of cream ale a few years ago and primed half with brown sugar and the other with Blue Agave Sweetener/Nectar. This was the brand we got at Costco at the time, but I think they are now carrying their own brand. I checked my notes and I found that I used 3.6 oz (by wt) to...
