    Need Hefeweitzen Help

I actually just had a glass of it yesterday. I definitely enjoyed it; its pretty complex but for some reason I felt that was less of a good thing as that sort of covers up the yeast a little bit. I've always considered Hefes unique in that they basically set the stage for the yeast to be the...

It's English? Are you sure? I haven't seen that one around but I'll keep an eye out. I do have a Southern Tier 2x in the fridge waiting for a tasting..

    Whats your ethnicity?

    Nope, you aren't.

Stella isn't that bad at all.

    Bottle storage

I wrapped the boxes in plastic trash bags and stashed them in my closet. I don't want my shirts/pants that are on hangers to be covered in beer. Hopefully this is enough.

Fast ways to cool down a primary

Woke up this morning and the fermometer is still indicating a cool 66. Dropped a frozen carton of water in there to keep it that way for a while. Not bad.

    Brewing/Bottling while sick

It does make you wonder- if any of you other HBT brewers have any background in medicine or microbiology, couldn't someone drop in a tablet containing bacteriophages (viruses that only target bacteria) or something into a potentially infected primary to try to salvage it? Probably not feasible...

    Brewing/Bottling while sick

If you have a cold, you probably have a viral infection. Viruses are different than bacteria in that they don't live on sugars alone- they require infecting human cells to reproduce. I'm not aware of human viruses that will take on yeast, either. Different genetic material. Just be sure you...

    English IPAs

AFAIK it looks like they have the 1882 available (in season but I won't know for sure until I walk in there), EKG's and Maris Otter Pale Ale Malt. But no Maris Otter in extract. So I'm going to do some research into BIABs and see if I can swing it with the equipment I have (I did just invest in...

    English IPAs

Yeah! I'm looking through it now and thinking about how to do it. It might be a good time as any to convert and try a BIAB.. but first things first, gotta find out if I can obtain the supplies at the LHBS.

    English IPAs

Do you guys have a recipe that I can take a look at? Please be kind enough to share the recipe with us once you figure it out! It sounds delicious. Overall I'm pretty sure I want my next batch to be English-style. Next time I go over to the LHBS I'll check to see if they have Maris Otter...

Fast ways to cool down a primary

It's a pretty good setup. Put some water up to the outside 2 gal mark just below my fermometer (I slapped some packing tape over it to keep it from getting wet), wrapped an old tshirt and towel around it (wet of course) and 6 hours later, the fermometer continues to indicate a temperature around...

Gasket fell into wort- did I ruin my beer?

To follow up on the OP: I bottled this batch a few days ago and it smelled delicious. A dry sweetness. Actually didn't have any leftover beer as I barely filled up bottle #48.. although that bottle got a nice dose of air so maybe I should have just drank its contents on the spot. Will let you...

    English IPAs

I think an English IPA is going to be one of my next brews. It probably won't have a complicated recipe indeed. I wonder though if it can be done at all with extract. I'm thinking about going BIAB but I haven't made that step yet. My LHBS should have the right yeast and hops, though.

Fast ways to cool down a primary

Wow I want one of these Cool Brewing bags. Next time! I'll order it in January when I start considering when/what to brew after this one's done. So I actually covered the primary with a towel and moved the setup out on my balcony into 30 degree Wisconsin weather. After I went out to run errands...

Fast ways to cool down a primary

Swamp cooler is an interesting idea. I don't have any large rubbermaids lying around though. I live in an apartment building otherwise I'd just put it in a garage. I think at the moment I'm going to move the cooler across the apartment to be near the windows. Its a white plastic bucket so I...

Fast ways to cool down a primary

I live in Madison WI. Good call on that- I might have to just move my fermenter out of the closet to be near the window as its all the way across the apartment from the window/balcony door.

Fast ways to cool down a primary

I put together a Hefeweizen last night and it's been fermenting vigorously this morning. Excellent. The temp sticker says 72 deg- I think I'd like to cool it down a bit to get more of the clove taste.. but I don't have any sort of cooling system in place. It's just sitting in my closet. Do I...
