Spike Conical- observations and best practices

Hmmmm....that's interesting?! So if you pressure ferment, no need for a blowoff tube, if not pressure fermenting, use a blow off? I haven't pressure fermented yet so I don't understand how that changes the activity of fermentation?

OK, they don't give a great reason (and said technically you could).....but basically that the holes are small because it's a release valve and it will make a mess depending on your fermentation. * See the 05:40 mark in this video:

I use a blow off tube in star san initially as well. I had the same question and Spike said you could...but recommended not using it as a blow off. They discuss it in one of their videos on their site.

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

The last 2 Hazys I made used these two. Mine were too far apart to compare directly. Look forward to seeing what you think the differences are.

Side-by-side converted to single chamber fermenter

New feature. I added a window. I didn't want to open the doors every time I wanted to look at a gauge setting or to check out what was happening with blow off. Found 2 old picture frames in the basement and took the glass from both of them. Then made a frame from a scrap 2x2 board. Cut (2)...

I use 2" TC X 5/8" HOSE BARB from Brewhardware. Attach 1/2" ID silicone tubing to it to dump to a bucket. I switch out (to the link you posted) to burp with Co2. My setup is conical > elbow > sight glass > butterfly valve (then switch out to either attachment above). I don't have extension...

Adding whole coffee beans in a conical

I guess I could be wrong (this will be the first time with the conical) but I don’t see why dozens of beans floating on the top of the wort wouldn’t make it through the racking port and jam up the tube to the keg??

Adding whole coffee beans in a conical

Hello, I've read a ton of posts about adding whole coffee beans and plan to do this to my stout that has just finished fermenting. My question is, if you toss them loosely into the conical, do the whole coffee beans ever drop out? If so, do you just dump them out the dump port before...

Good to know, thanks. I'll have to figure out my best option.

It was not, didn't even consider that. I'm totally new to this, my past experience up to this point is putting a hose into a top opening of a brew bucket. So I guess I was building up pressure pushing wort into the conical. So what's the proper way to do it, I have Spike's All-in-one PRV? Thanks!

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

Ok, so I attempted to move wort from my boil kettle to my CF5 about a week ago. From what I've read, most pump from the boil kettle into the dump port. So I tried Boil Kettle > plate chiller (Therminator) > CF5 dump port to try and do it in one pass. The first 4 gallons seem to go fine but by...

New to TC stuff and never looked to see if something like this existed. Seems obvious now but this allows me to use all my 1.5" & 2" interchangeably. Nice.

Yeah, that's my problem too, I only have a 1.5". Also interested in other's thoughts on this.

Interesting technique with the FoodSaver. I'm thinking about building something similar to yours. Could you just add (to yours) a simple $5.00 release valve like this: Control Devices-ST25-1A ST Series Brass ASME Safety Valve, 60 psi Set Pressure, 1/4" Male NPT

Makes sense. I see you are able to add Co2 but how do you purge it? Is that just a cap on the left side or some kind of release?

Not cheap! The PRV and the 1.5" sight glass came from Spike. (Of course you could find cheaper parts to do the gas & release valve piece but I was going to get Spike's anyway for use other than dry hopping). The 1.5" TC ball valve came from Brewershardware.com (Brewers Hardware 1.5" Tri Clover...
