What size bottles do you use?

For me, it depends what the bottle holds. If it's something real robust like a stout, then I'll settle for 12 oz. But if it's an easy drinking pale ale - 22 oz all the way. One of those and you're feeling good...two and you feel like a kid waking up on Christmas morning :cross:

    Disastrous newbie siphoning session

Someone's had too much homebrew. Here's my story... My first batch I was so anal about sanitation, but I couldn't get my siphon going right. So without a second thought I sunk my hairy arms in the bucket to fill the hose - then I realized, "You idiot! How sanitary are your sweaty arms after...

    Need Good AG Book

It believe it was "ORRELSE" who led me to Palmer's sight also. It's easy to understand but has enough information to give you a good comprehension as to the science behind what you are doing. I'd go there for sure.

    Rinsing with tap water?

Ya, I saw that "Going Tribal" also. I love that guy - dude he's brave. Maybe that'll be my next brew "Chew and Spit". Nasty. I just poured some Weisenbock down my gullet, and boy am I relaxed...I think it's time to hit the hay. Happy brewing!

    Rinsing with tap water?

I would disagree. I've never come across any historical account that mentions anything about wine and ales being something that they drank only because the water supply was poor. They loved the stuff! Just like we do today. The Egyptians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, etc. all loved their...

    Rinsing with tap water?

First of all, I just started using Starsan after using the one step powder sanatizer for quite a while. I also noticed the sudsy soap-like bubbles in my carboys afterward. Has anyone ever had this affect the flavor of their beer? I got starsan with the thought of being able to use the stuff...

    Primary Fermentation in "Ale Pail"

I first got the itch to make beer from watching "Good Eats" episode about making beer. He used two buckets - both with the spiggot. On the other hand it didn't seem that he knew very much about beer making. Whatever works!

Brew going bad after bottling - help!

Where are you keeping them while they age in the bottles? I always make sure my beer boxes are covered if any light can reach them.

    What is a Minute?

What is this dogfish, and is it just sold in one local area?

Pale Ale recipe - any good?

Something that worked well for me: My local HBS packed in little cheesecloth sacks in their kits for steeping the specialty grains. They are really cheap and also work well as a filter for the wort before it goes into the primary. They don't get too clogged either, and when you are done you...

    Sanitizing Techniques

Well, as for myself.. I try not to worry about it too much. I give each of my bottles a brief dunk in my bottling bucket with starsan. Then when all my bottles have soaked, I throw in the rest of the stuff for bottling. I don't worry about leaving a little bit of sanitizer in the bottles...

    Lazy Brew

Well, I work in evenings, so I get the mornings off. This is brew time for me. I'll be starting my first all grain batch real quick here - have all the equipment ready. I just don't want to get up too early - You know how it is. Spread out the fun over a couple of days... I'll try it...

    Compensating For Trub Loss

Thanks for your input. I really don't have a problem with bottling a few less because of loss. What I'm interested in is good beer. That's why I started doing this anyway. I think I'd rather have my beer a bit more robust, and to be on the safe side either add a bit more fermentables or...

    Compensating For Trub Loss

I'm trying to come to grips with some of life's most proponderous questions. So bear with me please. As a beginning brewer I chose ingredient kits to familiarize myself with different beers and the general methods of extract brewing. The kits have all tasted great - containing great hop...

    Weizenbock extract

Weisenbock...Mmmnn... I did the same thing to my Weisenbock, and it turned out really good. I only have about 6 -16oz. left, so I must brew another one up.
