Extreme Newbie, never brewed before. Need Advise

The kit at http://www.homebrewery.com/beer/beer-gs-basic-kit.shtml is pretty reasonable. If that is too much for a poor college student - then...That's a problem... Anyone out there have any creative ideas for the poorboy? I know one thing, extract beers aren't really all that cheap...

    ginger chocolate porter

Have you ever tried real ginger, from the root? Go down to the store and pick up a small ginger root and just take a tiny taste of it. You may be a bit surprised at the flavor to say the least. It is so strong that "Altoids" have made a new Ginger Altoid. It'll knock you on your a**. Target...

    Airlock bubble rate

Yes, I have a 6.5 gal for my primary, and a 5 gal for my secondary. I made my first few batches using plastic, but now I prefer glass. It is easy to see the activity level, trub, etc. They also clean well, and are nice to look at.

When to rack primary to secondary?

Hey SuperBrew, Is that a real quote from Benjamin Franklin (your signature)? I saw that on a tee-shirt at the local microbrew/pub. Almost bought it too. The only difference - it didn't say Ben Franklin. Back to the topic at hand. You should be able to keep your brew in the primary for...

    Airlock bubble rate

I never liked my bucket fermenter very much, just for that reason. I never could actually tell if it was really sealed. On the other hand they can be a bit easier to handle because the mouth is just a wee bit bigger than the carboy, not to mention they have that handle. I usually put all my...

    Dirty Jobs on Discovery

I just heard about that tonight from a buddy who absolutely hates beer (even though I make him try one each time he pops in). He said something about getting into a big tank of hot crap. Sounds like he's cleaning out the mash grains right after the sparge when they are still really hot...

    Cooling the Wort

I've heard the same thing many times. If you aerate the wort or mash liquid before it is under 80 degrees F. then it can cause flavor stability problems. I sometimes wonder whether or not all of these things are actually true... It would make it much easier if aeration wasn't such a big deal.

    Airlock bubble rate

That seems a bit too quick in my experience. Is the Primary in a Bucket type or Carboy? Those bucket types can loose their seal pretty easy.

    blow off

I've had several brews blow off the bubbler, and so has my home brew store guy. Never had it affect the taste. The big Kruesen at the time tends to protect the beer from infection. What a mess though! So I got a blowoff tube myself. I use a 6.5 gal carboy for 5 gallon batches. I never know...

What type of ceramic? What are we talking about here?

    Outdoor burner

If your neighbors get nosy, just tell them you are cooking meth., and to not make any sudden moves. That'll ease their minds. In my area, far more cook up meth. than they do beer. If you say, "I make my own meth." you are just small talking. But if you say, "I brew beer" they give you a...

    Labels . . . worth the effort?

I use a couple of methods. Either I will use a sharpie and initial the disposable cap, or if I bottle flip tops I use them little round stickers on the caps. I made my own nice labels once, but it was such a pain in the butt that I got lazy.

    How much does it smell?

Growing up on, and around farms all my life Pappy used to take a deep breath of the fresh aroma of pie rising from the moist earth - Cow Pie that is. He'd say, "Mmmnn, the smell of money..." Same thing with this whole process. I know - bad analogy. But anyway, I've never noticed any...

All Grain? Couldn't Have Done it Without You

Just a big note of thanks for all the help I've recieved here. I brewed my first all grain batch yesterday - and boy was it fantastic! I used the recipe "Good Life Pale Ale" from "The Joy of Homebrewing". It all seemed to go over without a hitch, and I was even drinking plenty of brew. I...

    Which Cooler to Mash In?

Thank you ORRELSE, That answered my question. I feel as if I'm jumping off the high dive for the first time and I'm going to belly flop to my death. I should relax and just have some fun with it. Thanks again.

    Which Cooler to Mash In?

I've been anticipating my first all grain for along time, and hopefully tomorrow is the day. I do have a big question before I start. I purchased two 10 gal. rubbermaid round watercoolers, a false bottom, a sparge arm, and all the spigot hardware. My question is this: Where do I do the 60...

Homebrewing on Food TV today (9/20/05)!

I have a warm place in my wee little heart for Alton. I had no idea you could brew up good beer. I used to like that store-bought dribble, but was getting pretty tired of the same old crap. Then I saw Alton's show. Well, it was love at first sight. I don't recommend taking many pointers...
