    Insulation vs. Low Heat?

A good way to maintain mash temp with a smaller kettle is to place the mash in a warm oven. Preheat oven to lowest setting. put the mash in and turn oven off. Take a nap for an hour...

    Wastewater Pipe Project

Brewers yeast is supposedly very good for septic systems.... Rather than using plywood lid, I’d suggest an hdpe barrel with fitted lid. If you are going to leave liquid in this system you want to mimic a sewage ejection system to avoid smells. The garden hose could pass through a hole in the...

    Too much trub

All grain beers will have more trub than extract. BIAB beers will typically have more trub than mash tun beers. Paint strainer bags typically produce more trub than a very fine polyester voile bag. It will settle out. Cold crashing will help if you can do it. Whirlfloc is good stuff.

    When to filter a beer

Time and temperature is critical imo.... Enough time at cold temps and filtering is not needed for my taste jmo Sparkling clear beer can be obtained without all the hoops of filtering. Just not needed imo.

No Chill and Top Up Water

There is some confusion regarding no chill imo. Some do a near sterile hot pack container of wort that will last months prior to adding yeast and fermenting. Some do a less strict no chill and pitch when cool. The former requires very strict sanitation, the latter not nearly as much.... I...

No Chill - Will My Funnel Melt?

Rather than trying to pour a boiling hot kettle thru a funnel, perhaps a 1 gallon Rubbermaid pitcher would be easier and safer to scoop the out wort out of your ketttle and pour it into your fermenter. A quick test w boiling water on your funnel would be telling, likely it is hdpe or...

    Help correcting too bitter beer

Tasting a beer this young can be very misleading.... I think a little patience is in order. Taste can change very dramatically in 2-6 weeks from fermenter to cold condition... Jmo, your trying to put the cart ahead of the horse...lol

    BIAB False bottom deadspace?

Boil coil is such low density wattage I doubt it would scorch using bag full volume...or could just shut off heat and insulate. Ymmv

Grain Absorption and water calculations EBIAB

For a 5 gallon batch, typical starting volume is around 7.5 - 8 gallons. Rather than rack your brain trying to guess at unknowns that you will acquire w experience, go ahead and brew a batch, and make adjustments moving forward. Of course, larger beers require more water than smaller beers...

First BIB didn't go so well...

Maybe BIAB is too simple and uncomplicated for you.... I can’t imagine how many errors you typically made using your 3v ? Lol jk A “contraption”...your words, to hold the grain bag to drain is of big benefit...figuring that out on the fly could be tricky. Ratchet pulley works very well...a...

Will my grain build be to big for my pot

I would BIAB mash in your kettle omitting 4 gallons, then dunk sparge in a bucket, another pot or your cooler. It is easy, you don’t have to heat the sparge water unless you want to... This will bump your efficiency as well which is a good thing for large beers. Biab w dunk sparge step...

Big batch in two separate brews the same day

I had read about the Texas two step, then one weekend I brewed Saturday and pitched yeast. I brewed a similar batch Sunday, and once the wort was chilled, I looked at batch 1 starting to kick off, and a lightbulb lit lol. I married the batches, and the yeast had quite the party tearing thru...

    Full Volume BIAB affect efficiency?

You say “very well crushed” I say compared to what? Your extraction should be higher imo....if your measurements are accurate and your calculations are appropriate.

    Get Rid of Thermometer?

Up to you, if you’re mindful and a little careful, the temp probe should not be a problem. You want to begin lifting the bag manually, perhaps pushing the bag clear of the probe with your mash paddle until the ball of grain is at the top of the kettle, then spin the bag to be sur it is free...
