ebiab - Scorched a batch.... what to do next time?

I scorched one batch of very many using HD elements. after the mash and collecting my wort I paused my session for an hour or so... my takeaway.... I believe heavy trub worts can scorch on the ramp to boil if the trub is allowed to settle and collect on and around the elements. Stirring the...

What the heck happened to my freezer floor????

I would advise against trying to coat or finish the aluminum floor of the freezer, as it is a very harsh environment and if or when the coating fails you will have a worse mess on your hands!!! The freezer manufacturer chose aluminum interior for good reason, this is an upgrade over a freezer...

What the heck happened to my freezer floor????

A Brillo pad might remove the oxidation on the aluminum quickly and easily. More aggressive then a polish but likely quicker and easier. Polish after the Brillo takes off the heavy corrosion if you want to make a weekend project out of it lol rinse most of the soap out of the Brillo first to...

    Mill rpm

I have used two different drills, I would guess under load one spins a 2-300 rpm, the other a bit faster maybe 500. I use either a corona mill or a Kegco 3 roller. I haven’t noticed a big difference between using either mill or drill for both BIAB or batch sparging with a stainless braid. try...

First BIAB underway - Centennial Blonde Ale

Ok jmo...skip the mash out. Highest cause of burnt grain and bag and ruined batch. If you want to do it, do so at your own risk, and please don’t email me about a toasted bag. sure it can be done if your diligent in stirring and heating, but the benefits are debatable at best, and some see...

First BIAB underway - Centennial Blonde Ale

If you plan on lighting that burner with the bag in the kettle, for the love of god, please use a gentle flame and stir constantly. while it will work either way, some prefer to attach the pulley to the bag, and the free end of the pulley rope to the lifting point. Best of all worlds is the...

    BIAB Help

Slow down the pump output w/ a valve or tubing clamp.... Try a BIAB false bottom from Brewhardware.com your not the first to have this issue, the actual open area of a basket is not that large. simple option is to ditch the rims, dough in and put your kettle in a warm oven to hold heat, but...

    wilserbrewer BIAB bags

This procedure using the BIAB bag for soup strangely reminds me of a recipe in Papazian’s book, The Complete Joy of Homebrewing called, Ye Olde Cock Ale, I will post the link below for those w/ strong stomachs. :) http://www.kaiserpenguin.com/ye-olde-cock-ale/

Reflectix - how to you attach it to your kettle?

Easiest method is to turn the burner off, and wrap the kettle in a blanket, towel or sleeping bag. Another option if your kettle fits, place it in a warm oven to diminish heat loss. If temps are low, you can fire the burner gently, but it is strongly advised that you STIR CONSTANTLY if adding...

    Plague Pale Ale

If I was looking to stretch ingredients as you say, I would consider a dunk sparge in another vessel if you have one. rather than corn sugar, ive had good luck and flavor from adjuncting w/ well cooked rice or pasta... Angel hair thin spaghetti works well :)

    Logistics of dough-in with BIAB

You want easy and highly fermentable dry beer....try an overnight mash, sleep while the enzymes work lol

    Fan for Keezer

Based on my experience, I suggest using a refrigerator w/ the ability to dehumidify, especially if you live in a humid climate. I had keezers for years and they were always swampy wet and moldy inside....and required cleaning etc...switched to a fridge and think it’s a better route for this...

Cereal Mashing - BIAB - Will this work?

I would just simply cook the corn in a pot on your kitchen stove, then add it to your mash in the bag. I read a while back that cereal mashing was devised to allow commercial breweries to avoid and handle / pump a sticky mash.... Not a problem for home brewers. Gelatinize (cook) adjuncts and...

Anyone have experience with this kettle for BIAB?

Wow, $52 for a 60 qt kettle w basket, valve, and free shipping! Those Chinese are amazing how cheap / inexpensive they can make a product!!! Certainly not on par with the more expensive kettles, but they are 3-5 times the price :)...so I won’t bother listing all the reasons why an expensive...

    Sight Glass Problems

Read the article....interesting. There will always be a pressure differential above and below the FB while the pump is running. The article mentions typical drawdowns in the sight glass up to 10” on a much larger commercial tun. As you mention, your return line alway flows well, so...

Dialing in crush on a weak motor

10 amps should be plenty. For an overly aggressive crush, I bet the hammer feature would get it spinning then turn it off. I used to think that hammer drills were only for drilling Rock and concrete. My eyes went wide open when my buddy showed me how well they drive long stubborn screws.

Dialing in crush on a weak motor

I have a kegco 3 roller aka mm3 clone. I was surprised how much torque it takes to spin it. I had it set way to tight initially and my 1/2” corded drill just grunted in defeat. Set at a more reasonable gap it doesn’t fine but I wouldn’t want any less power. Imo a double crush will...

    Help please identify stainless dulling

Perhaps scrubbing with a paste of Bar Keepers Friend would help restore the kettle. Might someone have left a chlorine bleach solution soak in the kettle?
