Figuring out the procedure for my first all-grain brew. (BIAB)

While you can calculate all you want, a simple approach is to measure first runnings, then simply your sparge volume will be pre boil volume less first runnings. I prefer to measure actual volume rather then pontificate about grain absorption LOL. A simple mark or two on your mash paddle...

    Insulation of the kettle?

You do manage to step away from the toilet, they’re prone to leaks also LOL

    Water cooler mash tun temp

Try using the Rackers mash temp calculator. Note that the temp given will be the mash water temp after the cooler is preheated. the easiest way to accomplish this is to overheat your water and add it to the cooler, then wait 5-10 minutes until the temp stabilizes. you can temper the...

BIAB - Water Retention Factor for Grains

The numbers put out for grain absorption on a typical mash run may also include dead space etc factored in.... if you want balls on accurate numbers, unfortunately you really need to collect your own data! just curious, why the obsession on grain absorption? LOL far much more to worry about...

Much Better Efficiency This Time Around

Love it...Well, you say your initial water volume was “about 7.5 gal”, then you report your pre boil volume as 7.39 (to the hundredth gal LOL) meaning your grain absorption was only 0.11 gal.... these are the reasons I run fast and loose with my measurements..... Glad you got your OG within...

Big differences in grain absorption. Need help troubleshooting a bad brewday

Nice sleuthing Columbo Doug LOL. OP should mention this to their LHBS so the don’t stack someone else’s grain bill w/ low enzyme malt.

Best way to sparge with BIAB Brewing?

I’m cheap also, imo it is a lot cheaper and easier to get a ratchet pulley and let the bag drain into the kettle :) yes sorry I realize this may not be practical for all applications.

    Other considerations

A decent grain crush? Depending on where you source grain, a reasonable and thorough crush is important to BIAB, or any all grain brew. an all grain 3 gal batch will not be a big step vs PM in my opinion.

    BIAB - Commercial scale?

nice grain bag if I do say so :) I like the chain hoist as well! Picture doesn’t do justice to the scale :) Well done!!!

Condensed Steps for Brew Day Measurements

Fwiw, I’ll offer my simple snarky reply to “Condensed Steps for Brew Day Measurements” Mash in somewhat slightly south of total volume, hoist the bag of grain, then continue to throw water at the grain bag until you reach pre boil volume...we don’t need no stinking measurements LOL jk but also...

Condensed Steps for Brew Day Measurements

For the record, Wilser suggests a full volume mash single infusion, insulate the kettle and take a nap. But if you enjoy watching your pid display, taking hand held temps and monitoring your pump, knock yourself out! LOL jk A standard FB, or a strainer basket is typically too restrictive for...

    BIAB with heating element question

If one were to size the bag to avoid contacting the heating element, the bag would be way to small and likely only fill 1/3 of the vessel. you can either use a FB, or not fire the element, or fire the element gently at your discretion.

E-Keggle BIAB - Bag Off Element?

The bag and grain will most likely form itself around the element and not put any weight on the element at all. sort of like pouring sand in the vessel that surrounds the element rather then sitting on it.... A well fitted bag conforms to the space available and doesn’t sit on the element imo.

Keg dry hopping with Eureka! after carbonation

Just be careful and be ready to seal the keg up quickly when adding the hops to a carbonated keg. The hop particles can cause foaming and gushing of the keg at an amazing magnitude....see video lol another one lol
