    i had a similar experience with my first (extract) amber ale...it tasted like sweet apple cider. I decided that it was due to incomplete fermentation/too much sugar in the brew. after about two months bottle conditioning it tasted fine...needless to say, it's all gone!:D

    simple ale recipe for beginer

    my 5c worth & a simple amber ale recipe. Muntons Blonde 1.5kg. Amber Malt Extract 1.5kg. Cluster Hops 5g - boiled for 10 minutes in 250 ml water. Safale US-05 23l batch. turned out really quite nice after 2 months bottle conditioning :mug:

    yeah it was a low quantity, 50 grams... Gaeilge dearg leann 23 Litres Ingredients 1. 1.7kg Coopers Australian Pale Ale 2. 500g Light Dry Malt 3. 100g Crystal Malt 4. 50g Roasted Barley 5. Yeast under the lid &/or Safale us04 & yes it should turn out nice!:rockin:

    Pommy, the OG was 1056. & an extra pack of yeast was pitched after 3 days. I always double pitch yeast now..seems to make the beer better? Also, all my brews have ended up with high FG's. haven't had a bomb yet!:ban: Cheers! oh & the surgery went well!:rockin:

    For my latest brew (Irish Red Ale) the recipe called for Roast Barley. I'm pretty sure my LHBS gave me Roasted Malt... is there a difference or are they the same thing. have I just brewed another brown ale? :drunk:

    reelale, the 'boiling' water was cooled before rinsing. the yeast was pitched at 24c & the 1.7 added into fermenter was a kit can...i was lead to believe that this was already 'processed' & not meant to go into the boil??? anyway, i'd like to thank everyone for their replies! much...
