    Ring around the bottle neck

Yeah secondary for 1.5 to 2 weeks. The continued fermentation/mini-krausen could be a possibility, in my first bunch of extract brews, im sure I bottled too early and the F.G was around 1.020. Some were over-carbonated. Since going AG, my F. G. are getting below 1.010 and they still have...

    Kentucky Boy Welcome

Hey I grew up in Lexington and went to UK. Go Cats! Good luck homebrewing. My friend works at the Liquour barn by Hamburg. Are there any other homebrew suppliers in Lex?

    Ring around the bottle neck

So its not a yeasty ring, probably hop particles? Even my recent beers that taste excellent have a slight ring. Is it the one step? Im sure others have had this same problem. I'd like to find the source, especially if could be contamination that im not aware of.

    When to Bottle Mead?

I did add 3 tsp yeast nutrient, but it has been close to a cold draft, probably hovering around 62-64. Thanks, I'll wait til it's down to 1.000. Im still not sure if i'll carbonate it or not. It tastes good still. How much honey would you add to give a light carbonation after its at or...

    When to Bottle Mead?

I made this mead at the end of September with 12 lbs Wildflower honey for 5 gallons and Redstar Premeir Cuvee dry yeast. Racked it in December, it cleared completely and the S.G. is now 1.005 (checked today). I'd like to make some sparkling (in clear beer bottles), and do a few still...

    Saving leftover wort for starters?

Default Krausening Formula From Charlies Book.... How much gyle do you use to prime? Gyle( qrts): wort without pitched yeast. gyle = (12 x gallons)/((S.G.-1) x 1000)) example: gyle = (12*5)/((1.040-1)*1000)) gyle = 60/40 gyle = 1.5 quarts This is exactly what I was looking...

    Thinking of Skiping PM

My 12th batch was AG and only 4 months after my first brewing experience. I just jumped in with just a cooler and a SS braid. I had to hold down the rubbermaid factory spigot the whole time. But I learned more in my first attempt, than I could have sitting around reading these forums over and...

    Ring around the bottle neck

Most of my homebrews end up with a "yeasty" ring around the bottle neck. I've read that in competitions, judges view that as possible contamination. Is this a rule of thumb, or are there other reasons for the rings? I'm going to try the oxygen-absorbing caps for bottling aged beers (like...

Be gentle its my first time

My buddy from Tennessee just dumped out a whole batch! He thought it tasted or smelled bad. And the kid is 'pert near' broke. He's constantly worried about his brew. I think he's losing his accent too! Preciate ya!

Why doesnt bentonite spoil brews ?

Bentonite clay is also mined/quarried to be used as kitty litter because of its absorbancy. (thankfully, Townes Van Cat goes outside and hasn't used his litter box in over a year). During heavy rains in bentonite clay country, roads become completely impassable and you cannot walk without a...

    Saving leftover wort for starters?

great, love the idea of not using DME. Another question though: What should the OG of the priming solution be for bottling? Higher for higher gravity beers? Ive been using the standard 1.25 cups DME in a pint of H2O for 5 gallons. How can I calculate the right amount to use based on the...

    Saving leftover wort for starters?

I have a few quarts of wort leftover that didn't make it into the boil. Its been sitting in the spare pot (covered) overnight. gravity is 1.046. Id like to save it for future starters. Since it will have to be boiled anyway, I figure I could just store it in a few jars in the fridge and the...

    Good Kettle Deal?

I ordered this pot and it has been working great. I use it for boiling and HLT. It was about 30 bucks shipping (to montana). The only problem (minor) is that my immersion wort chiller is obstructed by the 4 inch thermometer stem. It is completely submerged though and hasn't affected the...

We Have a Project - PACMAN YEAST!

Yeah, It's in a 6.5 gallon. I just got used to quick starts since Ive been making starters at least 24 hours prior. I'm not worried, in fact since its past noon, It might be time for a homebrew to minimize all worries! Cheers! thanks I also explored the aeration topics in the forum, great info!

We Have a Project - PACMAN YEAST!

Made a Dead Guy last night. Unfortunately I brewed on a whim and didn't make a starter. I smacked the pack about 1 PM and pitched at midnight. The pack had swelled up nicely. By this morning it's barely bubbling. I've been aerating (shaking) occasionally throughout the morning and I hope it...
