    Hobbit Brew?

I just found this thread. I've always wanted to try brewing with Yarrow, ever since I heard Papazian mention it. I think I'll start formulation a Hobbit Ale and use my Yarrow once it gets going this summer. It grows weedy in many parts of North America, but it is a native plant. There is an...

I'm looking to make a Rye IPA

Im thinking of going with Northern Brewer and Hallarteau. With a scaled down version of Denny's Rye Malt bill. (I have to make it fit in my cooler). So I guess that will make it more of a Rye Pale Ale not IPA.

    Mushroom porter

****take is not an expletive! Seems like it would give a good earthy aroma and flavor. You could just dump some sterilized soil or compost in secondary.

Max grain in 5 gallon Igloo?

Just wondering what the maximum grain bill is for other folks with a 5 gallon igloo system. The most Ive ever gotten in was just under 14 lbs.

    CO2 tank almost empty?

Could it be the plastic washer on the regulator was put in the wrong way? It is different on both sides. Or maybe I didnt have it screwed on tight enough to seat the washer.

    CO2 tank almost empty?

Yep, ive got a leak at the point where the regulator screws on to the tank. I'll see if plumber's teflon tape will work.

    CO2 tank almost empty?

The only scale I have is my small electronic one that only goes to 6 lbs. What is the weight of an empty cylinder? You need that number first, right?

    CO2 tank almost empty?

Right on, I checked the whole system for leaks with soapy water last night. No bubbles/leaks visible, unless they were so small I missed them. I wondered if the "leak detector" solution that ive seen for sale is worth it, does anyone use this stuff? But ultimately I was thinking that it...

    Corny O-Ring ?

Sorry to have changed topic or "hijacked" the thread. Should I use nothing to season the paddle? It's made of Yellow poplar, Liriodendron tulipifera, largest tree in the Eastern Deciduous forest. The paddle seems to repel water somewhat without any treatment.

    CO2 tank almost empty?

yeah I know the soapy water thing, thats how I tested it before. The keg held pressure. Could the leak be from the regulator? I'll check it all again.

    CO2 tank almost empty?

Yeah, that's what I suspected. Is there a troubleshooting process or any threads on the subject of leak detection? I'll probably just have to use my noggin I guess.

    CO2 tank almost empty?

Im just started kegging. Is there any reason my tank would already be in the red zone (order gas) after only 1 and 1/4 kegs. I thought a 5 lb tank would last for 5 or 6 kegs at least. I force carbed them both, and checked for leaks at the start. Does force carbing use up alot of CO2? or do...

    Corny O-Ring ?

I have some "Sanitary Petrol-Gel Lubricant", ordered from N Brewer. So should I just smear some of that on ALL 5 o-rings when I replace them. Also, would this stuff be OK to use on my new hand carved mash paddle to seal and season it as you would a cutting board?

Ever notice ones you go all grain, it consumes you?

I think we're all a little obsessive. Aside from brewing, I have a strange obsession with watching my houseplants grow and birdwatching, and recycling and composting. Is it obsessive to be consumed by thoughts and actions that undoubtedly will produce a positive outcome? It is when the actions...

Copper parts for a Boil kettle Hop screen.

Thanks that just what I wanted to hear. I'll see how well the new hop screen works within the hour . Making a California Common.

Copper parts for a Boil kettle Hop screen.

Yeah trying to get less trub, But with an immersion chiller, I still wouldn't be able to stir until it was cooled enought to remove the IC. Actually my system has been working fine, the whole hops filter most of it and secondary gets the rest. Actually, I guess my main concern was if it...

Copper parts for a Boil kettle Hop screen.

I just rigged up a new hop screen for the kettle. Copper "T" and 2 copper hose barbs, with 2 short SS braids and SS hose clamps. Actually im not sure, maybe they are brass? I got them at Lowe's. Are they likely copper or brass and should I even use this contraption? My old hop screen stuck...

    Help with my honey

That's a great idea, I think I'll try it. I had been adding it at about 10 minutes, strirring and bring back to roll, then add immersion chiller. (because I wouldn't be able to stir the bottom with the IC in there. ) This method should get more honey flovor in there.

    Anyone Use Honey?

I recently did a Honey IPA with 2.5 lbs honey and a Honey Brown with 2.5 lbs as well. Thought it would be a great idea to add gravity since I have a small mashtun. I will probably age them for a while. Will probably be great this summer. OGs were 1.066 and 1.062. Everyone should make...
