    Strange Smell?

Hey Caplan (and others :) ), Today I transferred from primary to secondary (after 7 days). To be honest, I didn't use a hydrometer, because frankly i think they are lousy (the cheap ones anyway) and also, i had good bubbling action. anyway, i took a little sample and i think it tastes...

    Strange Smell?

thx for the reply. well, to me, if you have 5 stages of "waiting" vs. 2 stages of waiting, it's more complex. now, cooking beer is more demanding, but it's kinda fun, making a big mess and all.

    Banana smell in the fermenter

you definitely need to get it out of the garage unless it's in some sort of super insulated box or something so that temp is kept constant. the temp of a garage fluctuates waay too much. also, check out Whitelabs webpage. i know that at least in the shop, i saw a poster that had all of the...

    Strange Smell?

I started my first wine kit last week. So far, all seems well. Nice bubbling action. I was wondering though, what should it smell like? I wouldn't exactly say it smells foul, but it's not exactly pleasant. It has a smell similar to when beer is fermenting, but of course different--- maybe...

    Wine and Sterilization

well, whether or not the mysterious powder was a bad idea, too late now!! i just finished making the batch. boy, sure was a lot easier than beer! however, a little more nerveracking due to the much higher cost. the mysterious powder was bought at the LHBS. it says "sanitizer and...

awesome! thanks. that was kinda what i was thinking (worried b/c my kit was $102 plus tax). i'll use my "powder sanitizer" that i've been using for beer making. _______________ dude, are you having a bad day? what's the saying? relax, have a homebrew!

    White Labs Yeast

ok guys, thanks! just one more question---- whatever amount of LME i use, do i have to replace it to make up for it since i'm taking it from the container that was to be used for my actual recipe? in other words, if i take 1 cup out to make the starter, is it okay if i use the remainer...

    White Labs Yeast

thanks for the thread link! i was wondering, can i use the malt extract that came with my Bass kit? how much should i add? about a cup or so? i'm thinking that specific amounts of water/sugar aren't really all that critical??

    Coffee Stout/Porter?

i'm pretty sure everything was milled- i bought it as an "extract kit." not a mini-mash, nor a mash. i didn't have any problems b/c i used a nylon bag to hold all the grains while they were steeping. hope this helps.

    White Labs Yeast

    Coffee Stout/Porter?

here's a recipe i posted recently. it's not a "coffee" stout, but it definitely has coffeeish taste. -GRAINS- 1/4 lb roasted barley 3/4 lb crystal 60L 3/4 lb chocolate (not the real thing) 1/4 lb flaked barley -LME- 6 1/2 lb Amber Extract 1/2 lb maltodextrin (for the extra kick)...

    White Labs Yeast

I bought some refigerated WL yeast yesterday (for making a Bass in case you were wondering...). Anyway, it was several hours from the time i left the shop and the time i put it in the fridge, and some of that time it was prolly at around 90F or so. Do you think it is ruined?
