    What makes AG so difficult?

After just brewing my first AG batch recently, I whole-heartedly agree. Definitely nothing difficult about it. I actually kind of liked the extra "complication" of mashing, and it really did not take that much longer.

    Hopstopper

I just got my hopstopper this week. Can't wait to drain a keg so that I can give it a try. I think that when I do brew again I will do a little ceremonial burning of the hop bags while I am draining out the wort.

    Counterflow Chillers

I just take a big picnic cooler, and for a day or two before brew day dump ice in it from my icemaker. While the wort is boiling, I fill the cooler the rest of the way with water. I then siphon this chilly water (usually sub-40 degree) through my immersion chiller, using a small fountain pump...

    Yet another AG convert

Bjorn, where did you get the 35, 24, and 4.5 from? And are there different constants for other ingredients? Any idea why this is different than the result above from ProMash (I definitely like your number better!!)

    Yet another AG convert

About a half gallon at most, but I didn't really measure. Also - hops (pellets in bags) must have had some remaining in them.

    Yet another AG convert

hey all - I joined the masses today with my first AG batch. Just got an American Ale "kit" from morebeer since I don't have a grain mill yet or a decent LHBS that actually stocks grain (sad but true). So the overall mash process went MUCH smoother than I ever expected it too. Not only the...

    Epoxy in mash tun?

The JB Weld did the trick. I glued it up Friday night, let it cure all day yesterday, and have let it sit in hot water (150-190 deg) all day today. So far so good - much improved over the clear epoxy.

    better boiling efficiency?

Anybody ever thought about using something like this for getting better efficiency out of your burner? http://www.campmor.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=13958 It works for backpacking stoves....why not for brew kettles? Just need some corrugated sheet metal big...

    Epoxy in mash tun?

Yup - I hear you there about the manifold. The epoxy is for my take at a cheap bulkhead fitting though. I found a 1/2" NPT to CPVC adapter at HD for about 20 cents, and am trying to glue a stainless washer to it to provide a seat for the o-ring that goes between the washer and the inside of...

    Epoxy in mash tun?

Hey all you budding chemists: Is it safe from a toxicological standpoint to use epoxy cement on fittings that will be used in a mash tun? From what I know of epoxy, once it is cured it is pretty safe stuff. I am just working on a design for a cheap bulkhead and slotted pipe system that...

Aging - need to be refrigerated?

I have a batch of Imperial Stout in secondary right now, and am ready to move it into a keg to age for a little while (few months?). Problem is that my beer fridge has been taken over somewhat by my better half, and only has room in it now for one Corny (the one that I am drinking from). Is...

    Let's talk brewstands....

something suspicious about that being a 170,000 BTU burner....looks EXACTLY the same as the 55,000 BTU burners that they sell at Northern Brewer.... But then again, the price sure is right even if it is mis-labeled.

Every Asian Beer I've Had Was Good

My wife and I went to Thailand last year - had both Singha and Beer Chang (literally = Elephant Beer if my Thai is correct). Both are similar - pretty poor in the flavor department, but pack a considerable punch compared to US beers of similar consistency. 6+% alcohol if I remember right...

    Cornelius Kegs

Corny kegs are incredibly easy to use. Need a CO2 reg, CO2 tank, all the connectors and hoses, and of course...a tap. How much you invest in all of this is up to you. Kegs come either new or used, and you can get by with a simple plastic tap if you don't want to invest in a real one that you...

    braided stainless for mash/lauter tun

I thought that the Hop Stopper was more of a kettle thing vs. something for a mash tun? Was actually thinking of getting one at some point for my keg kettle, but the homebrew budget is running a little dry right now, and the Hop Stopper ain't cheap. Someday....

    braided stainless for mash/lauter tun

I think that I am in the same place with you as the fittings go - NB is pricey, but seems easier than trying to find all of the stainless parts on your own. Sounds like you are planning on going with a false bottom. I was going a different route that I have seen others here talking about -...

    braided stainless for mash/lauter tun

I'm working on getting my AG equipment set up for first use, and thought that I was doing the right thing by going to HD and buying one of the short braided stainless plumbing hoses to use in the bottom of my cooler. Turns out you really have to pay attention though when buying one of these -...

    Long fermentation?

Hey all - I've been lurking for a while, finally decided to register and post. Great site and lots of good info. I am in fermentation right now for my first higher-gravity beer, an IPA with OG of 1.060. I used a starter (best thing I ever started using for the quality of my beer!!), and it...
