    Flat beer.

Congratulations on your first batch! I brewed my first ever batch (a kit of Irish Red Ale) 19 days ago. It was in the primary for 13 days. Yesterday made 5 days in the bottle so I chilled one for the evening. It was undercarbonated just as I suspected it would be, but dang it was tasty. It...

Spent Grain? Make Your Best Friend Cookies!

I made these Sunday and my dogs and the neighbor's dogs love 'em! I had to add a bit of water and a second egg to get a good mix, but they sure were a hit.

Saniclean is effective for how long?

I have a spray bottle of SaniClean that I mixed up a couple of weeks ago. How long is this mixed, diluted SaniClean effective? Can I use this spray bottle of SaniClean indefinitely? Or maybe just for a few days?

    I can't take it anymore

When you're taking a sample, how do you sanitize the sample-taking device? With my first all-in-one kit I got a 'Thief' and I've used it to sample. I have some Star San mixed in a spray bottle & I just spray the Thief thoroughly on the outside. Does that seem like enough sanitization?

    Starting my second batch

Well shoot, wish I'd thought of that angle myself - before doing it.

    Starting my second batch

Well, this batch went much smoother and less stressful than batch #1. I think my main mistake was that I didn't think my 3 gallons of wort was cooling fast enough so I made a run up to the closest store & got a bag of ice. I put the ice in the fermenter and poured the wort on it. Well, now...

    Starting my second batch

Thanks! I'm glad y'all wrote back. My boil is just about done and once I get this cooled down I had very nearly decided to just do a single stage in the Better Bottle, just so I could watch it :) .

    Starting my second batch

I finally have my first batch in bottles and am ready to start my second batch. I am hoping the second time around is a little less stressful. This second batch is a "Noble" Trappist Ale kit from a mail order place (I just this week found that we have a local supply place). I also got the...

Belgian Dark Strong Ale Easy Chimay Blue clone

Well, a recipe kit costs about $30-$35 for 50+ bottles, so $3.50 - $4.50 for a 6-pack. I'll take that all day for a good beer.

My first batch is bubbling away!

I just brewed my first batch ever 9 days ago. This forum has been a great resource since right as that process started. Mine too bubbled like mad for about 48 hours then totally stopped. My gravity readings are stuck at 1.014 but I'm just waiting it out. Keep us posted on yours!

    Hydrometer usage

I like this thought, a lot.

    Hydrometer usage

I'm figuring that maybe (hopefully) I just don't know what 8 day old uncarbonated beer should taste like. :)

    Hydrometer usage

I just did some more reading and found that that reading should be lower before the move. This has been in my basement at probably 60-65 degrees, so maybe it's just too cool? The tip I found said to tip the bucket & give it a whirl, or add more yeast. Any thoughts about that?

    Hydrometer usage

I bought a sample-taking device (called the Thief). Readings yesterday and today were 1.014. 1) Is it time to move it to the bottling bucket? (8-days in the fermenter so far) 2) Is is supposed to taste this bad at this point? I took a sip of the retrieved sample, and man -- that is not...

Thank you all so much for the help, and the encouragement.

    Hydrometer usage

Thanks for the help.... The recipe kit contained: 6 lb. Gold liquid malt extract 12 oz. Caramel 40°L 2 oz. Special B 2 oz. Roasted Barley specialty grains 1 oz Cascade 1 oz Fuggles 6gm Munton's dry yeast (Shew! I don't even know what some of that stuff is!) What kind of value should I be...

    Hydrometer usage

I'm brewing my very first batch ever, from a kit. I recorded an initial hygrometer reading of 1.42 last Friday and I am figuring that must be me reading it incorrectly. Next ... I recorded 1.014 on Tuesday (4 days in), and now 1.016 (6 days in). Does that sound right?

Belgian Dark Strong Ale Easy Chimay Blue clone

Oh I see now, I just read 'All Grain' for recipe type, and not knowing anything at all yet ... well, newbie mistake.

    Better Bottle failure- Things learned.

Thanks, I was just scanning that website looking for that data. Appreciate it!!

Belgian Dark Strong Ale Easy Chimay Blue clone

That sounds great and could be just where I start when I (inevitably) do an all-grain brew.
