buttery-smelling foamy wort (no yeast yet)

Buttery smell and flavor can be a diactyl indicator. Seems like this is too early to be picking it up though.

    Hello from Italy!

Welcome to HBT! :) Let me bug you about wine real quick. One reason to make your own wine is that it is fun. You are in one of the greatest grape growing areas of the world as well. Consider it. You could make a 150 lbs batch and put away 30ish bottles and send them home and have a keepsake...

Drinking at a brewery (protocol question)

They should have some info pamphlets for their servers to give out. Their customer base is generally going to be people who are a little more passionate about beer and sometimes very passionate. Potentially the place you visited did and your server didn't even know about it.

    Inexplicably Cloudy Beer

I had a problem like this with a rye I made. I'm still fairly new though. I messed my temps up bad on the mash and had 160ish temps for the first 30 minutes of mash and then because i was buzzed and tired at 2am messed up my boil off and added tap water to fill up the extra half gallon extra I...

    Rambler Owl Rye Amber Ale

Failed. Sorry. I look forward to trying this again. I learned a lesson on this one. It wasn't due to my temps though. it was because I put in unboiled water and my water has a lot of chlorine in it.

    New Kegging system not working!

You can remove that connector and take the little pin out and see if it is bent or rusted. Maybe you can fix it until your new one comes. I suppose however if you break it you will have no way to keep your beer pressurized until a replacement arrives. So keep that in mind he-man :)

    Austin, TX destinations

Lovejoys is my hang out when I'm in Austin. 20 taps and they brew some as well. Right off 6th near Stubb's on neches. Another great thing to do is go to a nice beer store and grab some great 22ozers and then take them out to Salt Lick BBQ outside of town and eat.

Straight to AG. Is it wise?

Your story sounds almost exactly like mine. I made the jump to all grain using brew in a bag method and now I'm doing traditional batch sparging. I also went straight into kegging this time. I recommend that as well.
