    Twine question

I am no expert by any means.. But from what I have read, choosing the largest/strongest of the bines, culling the remainder, allows a developed root structure to focus it energy on developing cones on the strongest bines, yielding a larger harvest than typical on many bines from the same root ball..

    We have HHHOOOOOPPPPSSS!

They were just standard run of the mill rhizomes (about 5" long and 1/2" diameter) with few noticable buds.. Got them from my LHBS.. Nothing special at all.. I have been building a monster compost pile for them for next year from spent grain and grass clippings.. After the insane performance...

    We have HHHOOOOOPPPPSSS!

Looks like the beginning of side arms... Mine did that about a week and a half ago.. then from the branches came the flowers and overnight the cones..

    We have HHHOOOOOPPPPSSS!

These weeds have well exceeded my expectations.. These are FIRST YEAR CONTAINER GROWN hops (Cascade and Northern Brewer)... Planted 3-22-2009.. The cascade is ~16ft tall and the NB is ~12ft.. The NB is LOADED with baby hops and the cascade is covered up with flowers.. I never expected to see...

I had a $50 pint of homebrew yesterday

Been there... Feel your pain.. You never get over it.. Every time you open the fridge a little whiff of that IPA will remind you of a simple oversight.. Salt in the wound..

Flower-like Buds from Base of Leaf Stems

This is my first year with Hops.. Growing two rhizomes in 20" pots this year and transplanting to a more permanent location next year that is under construction (bed is done, just need the trellis).. Anyway my plants are growing like mad here in the south texas summer heat (6" per day growth)...
  8. JamieT

    So here's my plan..

They are already 4ft tall.. and climbing.. Dont want to damage the bines trying to move and I dont have a trellis built over the permanant bed..

    Quick CFC Question

I would recommend throttling the flow on the output side of the pump exclusively. Restricting the intake could cause cavitation / loss of prime / and hot side aeration.. JT

    So here's my plan..

I wanted to get into growing a few hops this year, but didnt have time get my permanent raised bed location ready, so I opted to grow a couple of Rhizomes (one Cascade and one Mt. Hood) in 20" pots and transplant them next year. During hurricane IKE I lost a large pine tree in the back yard...

    My new Tuns...

Figured I would get some questions on the insulation.. It is 2-Layer.. The first layer is a high density foam yoga mat from Wally World.. Trimmed the width to 2" less than the height of the keg.. Those mats came with some elastic bands to hold the mat in a rolled condition for storage...

    My new Tuns...

Been scrapping together the components for a new system and decided to go ahead and assemble / insulate my tuns (HLT and MLT) this weekend.. I think they cam out pretty well.. Sorry for the crappy image.. A few too many Homebrewed Porters and a dead digital camera only left me with my...

    Somethings eating the leaves

Something is eating the leaves on my cascades.. I havent been able to locate any pests by examining the plants.. Looks to me like catepillar cuts on the leaves but I cant find any of the little buggers.. Any idea what it might be and how to protect the plants? Also the leaves near the top of...

I wish my kids did this well...

So my first year cascades finally are tall enough to train so I setup the climbing ropes for them yesterday evening and just gently looped the bines around the rope.. This after noon they have tighten up and wound around the rope 6 rotations.. I think they grew 2 inches in length overnight.. I...

    CO2 Purge in carboy?

I do it with every rack to secondary.. Dunno how much it helps.. Theorhetically you are diluting the Air in the carboy with co2 so it should help a little, but I doubt I ever get all of the air out without using a bunch of c02..
