A buddy gave me what he said was a 170,000 BTU burner but it looks like the 32,000 BTU burner on my cheap turkey fryer. Is there a quick way to tell if this is a high output burner? I have not used it yet.
THANKS
My brother and family are coming to visit us in Indiana in a month or so. I would like him to bring me something I cannot get here. What do you suggest for a great Virginia beer?
Thanks!
I'm one of the lucky ones. My wife is very supportive and enjoys the beer. It has taken about three years but I now have an awesome 3 tap kegerator in the basement, a keggle sized brew rig in the garage and a small 3 gallon setup in the kitchen for small batches.
For me it is all about...
I batch sparge with this cooler using a SS braid. Have used it 4-5 times and love it. Last 3 batches have be 74-77%, but have been pretty big beers, 7.5+%.
I did have problems with my first couple of batches getting stuck mashes pretty quickly. Denny suggested that I barely crack the valve...
Did you build this? Interesting idea, I would like to hear how it turned out.
With a 53 gallon bourbon barrel full of RIS in my basement, I could see a device like this in my future.
Good stuff, thanks,
I have read up more on this and I will be doing this in a month or tow. Just built a small brewstand with a future pump in mind.
Something I don't really get. I batch sparge. When I take my first (or second) runnings, do I have a pump hooked up to the outflow on my mashtun...
We have a bourbon barrel in my basement working on a big RIS right now. We are thinking down the road at future brews.
Thinking about doing Denny's Vanilla Porter and was wondering if tossing a handful of vanilla beans in the barrel would impart any vanilla flavor to the barrel once done...
I'm with you on all that. I am looking for pump users to weigh in on the heights of the different vessels and how batch sparging is properly performed with a pump.
Thanks
I would rather not use a gravity setup because I don't want the vessels any higher than the are now, if possible. $$$$ for the pump aside, if I can benefit more from a gravity setup I will, but I would rather not go that route.
We won't get to do a ton of brewery tours on this trip. Mainly want to fill the trunks with as many different 6 packs as I can fit! I do plan to research a lot of these places so a tour may fit in.
OK, I understand what a pump does, lets get that out of the way.
I know there is a certain logic to brewing with a pump, that is what I am not familiar with.
I currently heat strike water in the keggle, bucket pour into the cooler tun, drain the runnings into a 5 gallon bucket and heat...
Taking a trip this spring. Passing through OH, PA, NY, CT, MA, VT, NH, ME.
Mostly looking for stuff I cannot get in Indiana.
Help me out, what beers do I not want to miss picking up a 6 pack of?
Thanks much,

Beech Grove here.
Get all my stuff at Tuxedo Park Brewers Supply in Fountain Sq. Walked in a few days after they opened in Jan, 2011 and never looked back.
