Show us your element housings/pots. How did you do it?

Please clarify, Rivenin - you epoxied the element to the 1 1/2" reducer, wired, filled it with silicon, then screwed on the cap? How is the element grounded?

Good deal on a hop screen/ basket?

Forgot I had these pics on my cell phone... I was off on my dimensions; my filter is 10" diameter x 12" tall. Here it is sitting in my 10.5 gal brew kettle. It sits about 2" above the bottom of the kettle.

I'm currently away from the house, will post pics next weekend.

Good deal on a hop screen/ basket?

I had the same concern regarding the lack of area when using large quantities of hops. So, I ordered a hop screen 12" in diameter x 14" deep, 300 micron screen. I received it the other day, and really like how it fits in my brew kettle. I can't wait to brew with it, will report on how it works.

    New stir plate

No advantage that I can think of to using 4 magnets. I actually think it would cause you problems. Just make sure your magnets are oriented as you stated (one with + side up, other with - side up) and that the distance between your magnets, center-to-center, is about equal to the length of your...

How to find Coolant Lines in a Fridge

Don't think that will work, but it might be exciting! If I recall, it goes something like this: Try rubbing alcohol and corn starch. Mix it into a paste and smear it on the fridge. The heat from the coils will dry the alcohol, showing their location.

Good deal on a hop screen/ basket?

Thanks, Bx. Sounds as if the consensus is that, for pellet hops, 300 micron is the way to go.

Good deal on a hop screen/ basket?

I've been looking into making a large hop screen/basket for my brew kettle to contain the pellet hop mess (I make a lot of IPA's). I found a guy on E-Bay, very well reviewed, who will make a stainless steel, 400 micron basket, 12" diameter x 12" deep (my requested dimensions), with tabs to rest...

Forgot to take OG prior to pitching

I had a brain fart today, and forgot to take an OG sample until after I'd already pitched yeast ( like 2 minutes after). Any idea what effect, if any, this will have on the accuracy of my OG reading? Thanks!

    Need help with blow-off assembly

I want to rig up a blow-off tube for my conical fermenter. I was planning to use a rubber stopper with about a 3/4" hole in it to accept a piece of 1/2" ID tubing. Any advice on how to drill such a hole in a rubber stopper? Any other suggestions for a simple blow-off assembly? Thanks!

Just finished mine yesterday... Bare bones - 93mm fan, couple of rare earth magnets, rheostat, 5v cell phone charger.

Planning an E-HERMS build - questions

Okay, so I'm going to use an Auber 2451 PID to control a 5500W element, initially at 110V but want to go to 220V, to run my HERMS vessel. I'll use a 40A SSR to power the element so that I have plenty of capacity for later expansion. I'll put the PID, SSR and some switches in a small control box...

Planning an E-HERMS build - questions

I'm also wondering - is it possible to install two NPT sensors, one at the outlet of the HEX and one in the HLT (to measure water temp), and use a switch between the probes and the PID controller to select which probe is in use? Anyone ever try this? Would the probes still read accurately if...

Planning an E-HERMS build - questions

Thanks! I'll look into the RTD probes; sounds like a much better option. I am planning on using a 5500W 240V element, initially operating at 110V.

Planning an E-HERMS build - questions

Thanks, Kevin! Please tell me more about the RTD; it's been a loooooong time since I've messed much with electronics, and have very little experience with temp probes. I'll take your advice and go with the 40A SSR, as the cost difference is minimal. I'm making 5 gallon batches, and planned...
