    What are you drinking now?

While grocery shopping I decided I wanted/needed a hop bomb. This is ground zero. "I will make it felony to drink small beer. "

What I did for beer today

Processing 24 bottles (soaking off labels, washing, sanitizing), ordering a new digital thermometer and a toolbox to catch the random beer making supplies.

What I did for beer today

Took the first gravity reading of a smoked porter and it is .002 below target FG. The sample is still sweet enough that I think it will drop more. Only 4 days into fermentation. Will pick up a second carboy tomorrow so I can split the batch and add chipotle to one of them. Putting some peppers...

    did my starter die?

I didn't check the mfg date. My LHBS is pretty good with moving past-date yeast to the bargain bin. It was Wyeast 1056 I repitched the yeast to a new starter. Had a bit of activity but no where near what I want. Eh. Going with Safale-05 and the starter is going down the drain. "I will make...

    did my starter die?

I have a non-starting starter. Boiled 3.2 oz DME in a quart of water, cooled, added my Wyeast pack. What I didn't do was strike it and let it sit. Instead I struck the pack then opened and poured into the wort. No activity at all. I'm going to pour off the wort since the yeast has settled...

    What are you drinking now?

This I bought because I'm doing a smoked porter later this week (although I'm aiming for Stone's version). This uses a German smoked malt, and the taste is very woody and somewhat astringent. Mostly, though, I bought it for the 16.9oz bottle it comes in. "I will make it felony to drink...

Funny things you've overheard about beer

I'm a big fan of the Bastard, and I for one am glad they have a wide distribution. I can get them in Western New York. Last week I was inLA and had the latest Enjoy By... and thought it was fantastic. But my favorite of their beers is the Smoked Porter. Not a hop bomb, subtly peat smoked, and...

What I did for beer today

Yesterday I went to the LHBS to buy makings for a smoked porter and some needed hardware. Last night I bottled a Bourbon Barrel Black IPA and checked gravity on a low ABV amber. Today I started a starter for the porter. Tomorrow I'll prep some bottles for the amber (gravity holding steady) and...

    The Chemistry of Bottle Priming

I bottled my first batch using a bottling bucket tonight. Every batch before this used sugar funneled into each individual bottle. This is soooo much mor civilized. I used online calculators to determine the amount of sugar I'd need, and I noticed that when the temperature of the bottles is...

    What are you drinking now?

This. Look! They invented a "new style" of beer all by themselves. Says so, right on the label. I think the name is their marketing department's way of saying "Weak IPA." The beer is only ok, but the bottle is really what I'm after. The glass is plain (although the bottom says "do not...

What I did for beer today

Cold crashing a Black IPA, made room in the basement for equipment, checked gravity on a messed up Fat Tire clone. Hoping for another couple points, but the yeast had to sit for a week at 50° while I was out of town. The mess up was a bad calculation of boil to batch volume OG was just under...

    Calling all Extract Brewers. HELP!!!

I think amber/pale is exactly where this is going to end up. Try using a recipe calculator, plug your LME in and see where you are. If you use the Crystal and Chocolate as steeping grains, they aren't going to contribute to the gravity. Careful with chocolate. A little bit will significantly...

How many gallons of homebrew in 2014?

Three gallons of my first stab at a Fat Tire clone - my wife's favorite beer - and 2 gallons of Bourbon Barrel aged Black IPA. The IPA was brewed in late 2013 but is still in secondary, so I'm counting it.
