This has been bothering me... Why is it suggested that you primary ferment wine without an airlock (and some people even suggest stirring it) while beer you are supposed to airlock and leave alone from the start? Is beer and wine yeast so dramatically different? Or is it that the chemical...

Yes. Don't throw it out. Give it some time and if it's not at least drinkable, give it another week or two. Repeat as necessary. I've made beer that tasted like lighter fluid initially but was actually quite good after another month in the bottle. What was the FG?

I hear ya! My husband doesn't like beer either, but loves Mt. Dew. I am thinking of brewing up something with Mt. Dew, like a Mt. Dew Cream ale, for his birthday.
