    Temperature stratification before fermentation starts

Good catch. The tilt pro is big. So big it can’t fit inside the chiller coil. It has to go on the outside between the tank wall and coil. It’s probably showing the heat from possibly even touching the coil from time to time. While it probably is a little warmer, it’s likely not actually 10...

    Temperature stratification before fermentation starts

I see what you mean now on the down/up loop. One keg of the coil goes straight down. I’ll have to check my arrangement on the next batch.

    Temperature stratification before fermentation starts

The garage is uninsulated. It’s 34 right now in the garage. That thin neoprene is more for looks than actual insulation I think. Not sure what you mean about pumping from the bottom up. It’s just going through the chiller coil loop. The heating pad is the supplied one with the ftss system...

    Temperature stratification before fermentation starts

Temp range for safale 05 is 53-77. I did exceed the upper end of that briefly. I don’t think this is going to have a huge impact on my beer. Just trying to figure out what to change going forward. I could lower the temp at first to the low 60s to average out the top and bottom temps to try and...

    Temperature stratification before fermentation starts

I’ve got one of those, but they don’t put out enough heat. It’s good for at most about 20 degrees. It’s 22 degrees outside right now. I was looking for a bigger or more powerful heat wrap that I could use. Hopefully something that the ftss controller can use, but not an absolute must.

    Temperature stratification before fermentation starts

So for some context. I’m brewing in my garage. Temps dip to near or below freezing sometimes. I am heating by running warm water through the chiller coil. Heat is not coming from the bottom and rising up. I’m worried the heat is all going to the top and not registering on my ftss probe. As...

    Temperature stratification before fermentation starts

Now fermentation is barely slowing down. Temp is mostly still holding fine, but it did tick up to 69 once. My bet is that as it continues to slow more and more that my stratification comes back. Especially during cold crash.

Screen grab of the tilt graph thus far.

    Temperature stratification before fermentation starts

Wondering what you all do if anything about temperature stratification before active fermentation starts. Once fermentation is going strong, everything stays pretty good and mixed around. I hadn’t noticed stratification to the level I’ve seen until my current batch. I recently bought a new...

Low Stout pH; Below Predicted in Bru'n Water

My last two beers, I targeted 5.2 and 5.5. My 5.2 hit exactly 5.2, which was the video I referenced above. My 5.5 hit 5.4. I’m happy with bru’n water.

Low Stout pH; Below Predicted in Bru'n Water

Someone correct me if I’m wrong here. Acid’s one and only use is lowering pH Chalks one and only use is raising pH Now I know chalk also brings some calcium, but it’s better to get your calcium from somewhere else. Also the addition of calcium that the chalk will bring is mostly unimportant...

When to add a nut butter

This isn’t a beer I’d enter into a competition ... I don’t think. It’s really more to suit the wife. It is a good dessert beer. It’s modeled directly off of rogue hazel nut brown, but using pecan butter instead. I use this for the pecans ... Georgia Grinders Premium Nut Butter, Pecan, 12 oz...

    Junk Malt Muncher Motor

I used the exact same motor on my monster mill 3. Your experience is the same as mine. Originally I was doing 3 vessel fly sparge using larger mill gap. The motor needed to be turned on and running when I poured grain in. I was using a gap of .040. I moved to biab and wanted a finer crush. As...

When to add a nut butter

I’ve got a pecan brown ale that my wife loves. I have had luck using actual pecan butter in the past. I’ve heard the cautions about the oils affecting head retention, and possibly even going rancid. I’ve never had issues in the two batches I’ve done. I don’t want to use an extract. Looking for...

    pH Buffer Solutions

Thanks for the advice. It’s related to beer. We’re all 21 and above here, supposedly. You made an account to post here on homebrewtalk. If you want to watch the video, make an account on YouTube and confirm you’re 21.

The file is too large to post here. It’s about a 5 minute video. If someone knows how to tell me to post it outside of YouTube I will. Also, are you serious about the 21 thing?

    pH Buffer Solutions

I am being caution in my personal life and job to not have any possible complaints come back on a video that I posted. Beer (wort) is tested in the video and id rather click a simple button than answer any questions. Video asked if it was “for kids” and I said no. Age restriction was automatic...
