uh oh! need quick temporary wort chiller ideas

I didnt assume anything. I just stated that you were describing sticking an IC in a bucket of water with no flow. I'd love to see the results of that experiment. I'll let you know how my hybrid works out too.

That's why you put something solid in the middle :) I will prove you all wrong soon !!! :)

    Bottle condition after cold crash?

interesting. I posted this same question a few months back and everyone told me it was a bad idea to bottle after cold crashing. Where were all of you then???? :)

uh oh! need quick temporary wort chiller ideas

yea, you're right. But there has been a lot of talk about 'hybrid' chillers lately and how ineffectuve they are, and every one links to that palmer description. The problem though is that people say they are putting an IC in a bucket of ice and standing water, which is not what Palmer is...

uh oh! need quick temporary wort chiller ideas

So, tell me how hot water is not being forced out? Cold water comes in one side...hot water goes out the other. You can also put something solid in the middle of the coil to provide more turbulent flow around the coils. You can also direct the water to spin in the opposite direction of the...

    Bottle condition after cold crash?

I disagree. You will have issues with carbing the bottles. If you cold crash, all the yeast will fall out of suspension. Then when you prime, there will be no yeast left to consume the priming sugar.

uh oh! need quick temporary wort chiller ideas

the problem is, you aren't describing a true hybrid chiller at all. In a hybrid chiller the hot water is forced out. What you are describing is just a reverse immersion chiller.

uh oh! need quick temporary wort chiller ideas

I'd like to know the details of that conversation. I am building a "Hybrid" chiller...but a TRUE Hybrid chiller...no stationary ice water.

    pseudo counterflow?

I'm not sure why it would be much less efficient, or why you have to use ice at all. I am going to build a 'Hybrid' chiller like this. I have already cut my immersion chiller :drunk: So, there's no going back now. It can be almost as efficient as a normal CFC or even more efficient if...

    Cry Havoc

Can't you just mash around 148 - 150 or so to make a more fermentable wort?

    Counterflow Chiller Tutorial

Yea, I dove in. I cut mine last night. The only issue with mine is that it's 1/2" copper tubing...not 3/8" like everyone uses. So I will probably make it at least 30 feet...or maybe the whole 50', since more wort will be flowing through at any given time. Not sure yet. And I will have to...

    Brand new technique!

Haha...So you made alcohol, then you boiled it off. You are gonna end up with an O'Douls... :)

Pros and Cons of an external MLT heat transfer system (besides money)

If it was an aluminum MLT, it'd be a lot more efficient than a SS one...but still probably much less efficient than the Copper being in direct contact with the wort.

    I'm in! Bought grinder

+1 to that. No grinders here. Hoagies or Subs. Dibby33, that grinders a 'dead set rippah'

    Keggle is getting a spigot!

Well, I am still waiting for my SS Ball Valves, but I have completed all the inside of the kettle work. I ended up getting the 5/8" CMP x 1/2" MPT compression elbow. It works perfectly with the 1/2" stub out. I have it angled towards the left side of the keg. Siphon works also. I filled the...

    Counterflow Chiller Tutorial

    ok....anyone wanna build me a 25' CFC and trade a 50' IC? :)

    Counterflow Chiller Tutorial

I have a 50' 1/2" IC that I have been considering converting. How hard would it be to convert this?? Would I need to get 3/4" hose? Is 1/2" Copper tubing too big for a CFC? Also, would I have to straighten out the copper before slipping the hose on? Thanks.

Don't do this with your Glass Carboy!!!

Do it again! But this time drop it straight down.....I wanna see it bounce :)

    How does my MLT look?

You could get a few more Ts and T off the two middle rows in the center, then bring the 'arm' to the middle of the manifold to another T. That way, when the siphon starts happening all the wort will be drawn toward the middle of the cooler and all parts of the manifold will drain at the same...
