    Rye IPA Attempt

update for anyone interested: sampled today, 5 days after pitching. 1.012fg, and i'll be dryhopping tomorrow night. tasted the sample and it's a nice dry bitter IPA for sure. the rye character is there but is subtle. if i didn't know it was rye i might not realize it, but you definitely know...

    Rye IPA Attempt

Nice, I like your addition of vienna. when I set out to make mine I wanted a tried and true recipe since I've never made one and only had a sip of someone else's. I have a basic expectation of these ingredients and I love how a even a small change can make a huge difference. Cheers!

What are the benefits to cold crashing?

i cold crash because i don't rack to secondary and i do like the clarity. i feel like the clarity is the finishing touch. the cherry on top of the sundae :)

what temperature should my beer ferment at?

+1 to the comments on yeast above. fermentation temp does depend on the kind/strain of yeast you're using. what strain did you get? i know white labs lists comfortable temps for each yeast strain on their website. there's really no 'ideal' temp for all yeasts. more than likely, your fermentation...

    Rye IPA Attempt

    k. edited again. i think this is the one i'm going with. i dropped the 2-row and gravity/alcohol a tad, which resulted in higher bitterness and rye percentage. i'm gonna go for it. i can always tweak it again. i might go with 1oz each of cent/col/falconers as dryhop, but i have a week to think...

    Rye IPA Attempt

Btw denny, if I could ask for advice: this recipe has both flaked wheat and carapils. Are they both being used mainly for body and head retention? And if so, why use both? Variety?

    Rye IPA Attempt

Hey denny, thx for dropping in! I appreciate the input! I have a few more days before brewing so it's possible that this will change slightly: more rye, less 2-row, etc. but I think I have it the way I want it. It's my first rye. What's the worst that could happen lol

    Rye IPA Attempt

thx yooper! i was a bit concerned about the crystal so i wouldn't mind backing it off a bit. i also have some falconers flight i'll add to the dry-hop, maybe it will tame the dank :)

    Rye IPA Attempt

Hi all! gonna try to brew this weekend. i used denny conn's rye ipa as a starting point. my system is a 3gal BIAB, so if the weights seem low, that's why. lmk if anything stands out as odd. i think it should be pretty decent. I'm doing single stage/no secondary, dry-hopping at 1 wk, cold...

American IPA Purring Kitten Session IPA

i brewed a version of this a few weeks ago, and has been in the bottle for almost a week now. i'm dying to try it, so i'm cracking one this sunday. my version used nelson sauvin/centennial/cascade as dryhop, and used wlp001 instead of english ale yeast. pre-bottling samples smelled and tasted...

    Help!!! No Bubbles During Fermentation

i gotta agree with the posters above - my go-to bucket didn't bubble at all this past batch so it's gonna be retired to bottling only use. good lids make all the difference.

    bottling and brewing...

I take over the kitchen to bottle, then outside to brew. I'm currently fermenting in what is usually my bottling bucket, so I have to juggle equipment a bit, but I have 2 other buckets so I'm not gonna hassle it. The wife and I get along fairly well when it comes to my hobby/obsession, so as...

    Bottling question.

i cap mine every 12 or so. i suppose it doesn't matter too much how long you wait, but i do mine at that frequency cuz i know if i bump one, they're ALL going down like bowling pins. if i spill any, i'd rather it was only 12 rather than the entire batch. and FWIW, jamil z says the oxygen is...

    SMaSH APA

Thanks for the encouragement and advice! Forgot to add that I used wlp001 that I had rinsed, stored, and pitched with a starter. Pretty happy with the results! Tom
