    Sweet Stout Deception Cream Stout

I'm going to give this a shot this weekend. I've decided just to stick with the Extract version in the OP but with a few modifications. Specifically, I'm using LME instead of DME because my LHBS always has a fresh supply and its cheaper. Also, I'm skipping the yeast nutrient and using Safale...

    bottle cleaning advice...

Does the same hold true for my fermenter, etc? I've been rinsing everything off/out after sanitizing. Funny, I know from backpacking that small amounts of iodine are ok to consume, I just assumed it was better to rinse it out.

    Sweet Stout Deception Cream Stout

I might try this soon. Sounds easy enough for me to do. Noob questions: 1. Stupid question, but in the extract recipe, would the Caramel/Crystal, Chocolate, and Roasted Barley be a 30 minute steep? 2. I recently did my first PM and liked the process (yet to see how the results turn out...

    bottle cleaning advice...

How long does iodophor take to sanitize bottles? I ask because so far I've been handwashing all of my bottles with a brush, rinsing them with a bottle washer, then filling up my sink with iodophor solution, submerging the bottles (working all the bubbles out), and letting them sit for 5 minutes...

    Is Secondary fermentation really needed???

Interesting that there seems to be geographic differences between people who use a secondary and people who don't (most of you that say you use a secondary are Texans). I'm just getting started (and am a Texan), but I'm using a secondary and my LHBS (located in Texas) recommends it too.

    Christmas Ideas

I was thinking of starting a similar thread. Here is what I currently have: 32qt SS kettle 8qt SS kettle (for PMs and Spaghetti) Bucket fermenter w/ bottling valve Propane burner Hydrometer & tube Siphon hose & spring tip bottle filler 36 bombers (22oz bottles) Capper 3 piece airlock...

    Outdoor burners

I got a 120k BTU burner from Academy (their house brand - "Outdoor Gourmet") for $30. Its quiet, efficient, sturdy, and cheap. Not pretty though. Also, whatever burner you get, I highly recommend getting a one that has only three legs, not four. With four legs the surface you sit it on...

    Yeast affect on starting gravity

Well, that's good I guess. I really made an effort to shake it well, too. Is it kosher to use a sanitized spoon to stir water into the wort rather than just trying to shake it to mix it up?

    Yeast affect on starting gravity

Did not check for conversion....was told by LHBS it wasn't that important based on the assumed efficiency (see below). Final volume was 4.5 gallons. Volume of recipe design was 5.7 gallons, so I was low in that regard using only 5 gallons total for the mash/sparge/boil. I hope so, thanks...

    Yeast affect on starting gravity

I brewed my third batch tonight (second try on the same recipe) and avoided many of the mistakes that I made last time (even though the beer from last time is still pretty darn good). I had a little bit of trouble getting down to pitching temps because I hadn't bought enough ice for my bath...

How would you classify my beer?

My first brew was a Munton's IPA can kit and I added three pounds of light DME and no sugar to the boil. It ended up tasting like Shiner Bock.

    Safety tips for brewing outdoors

Pretzel, I use a big cooler as an ice bath and a block of sanitary ice (same method you described) and can get a 4gal boil to pitching temp in under a half hour. In fact, sometimes the sanitary ice won't melt all the way cause the ice bath works so well. Also, I use the cooler as an...

    Safety tips for brewing outdoors

A fairly strong friend and an ice bath work for me (for 4 to 5 gal boils).

    Safety tips for brewing outdoors

This is my biggest fear with outdoor brewing. I meant to mention in my previous post that I also have a fire extinguisher handy when I brew.

    Safety tips for brewing outdoors

Its not any more dangerous than grilling (probably safer, to be honest). I've brewed in TX with shorts and close-toed shoes and been fine. Just don't stand right up against the kettle or with your feet underneath it and you'll be fine. An added plus is a boil-over can be cleaned up with a...

What to do with lots of Nugget hops

Ah....that Rye IPA sounds great. I haven't had a lot of Rye beers but I really like the ones I've had. Think it would come out ok as a PM?

What to do with lots of Nugget hops

These were sold at the Independence Hops & Heritage Festival in Independence, OR. The guy I know is a dentist and does a lot of pickling. Same?

What to do with lots of Nugget hops

Done, done and done. Its all in the freezer in smaller bags. My LHBS vacuum packed them for me in 3 ~3/4lb bags and I've given away several ounces (have to share :mug:). I'd love to have a look at your recipe.
