    Stc-1000+

Okay, this is quite similar to my setup. Instead of a water bottle, I use a wine bottle willed with water with a thermowell inserted through the cork. The mechanical thermostat cycles pretty frequently and I'm hoping to reduce the amount of cycling by giving it larger hysteresis. I've had it...

    Stc-1000+

I'm also planning to use an STC1000+ for the same purpose, e.g. to control my 600 bottle wine cabinet. Thus far, I've just been using its built in mechanical thermostat, but I'd like to have a digital confirmation of temp. BTW, do you have the probe in a wine bottle, or is this in the open air...

    iodine test and SG

Maybe because a longer mash leads to further extraction of sugars/starches from the grain? I've seen plenty of posts boasting about complete conversion in 10 minutes of mashing, but I think extended mashes tend to give better extraction simply through solubilization of starches from the grains...

HOWTO - Make a BrewPi Fermentation Controller For Cheap

Yeah, sorry to point that out. I just didn't want you burning something up. I'm not really sure how an overloaded SSR responds. I know that the typical SSR failure mode is to keep the circuit on, which would likely lead to overheating, so this could be dangerous. Also, SSRs running near their...

I'll say! And she makes beer! :mug:

HOWTO - Make a BrewPi Fermentation Controller For Cheap

Hmm, is this only for switching a door light, or will you also control the compressor with that? It can only switch a max of 2A. Probably okay for a couple of Fermwraps though.

HOWTO - Make a BrewPi Fermentation Controller For Cheap

Mine is placed in an extra port of one of those orange carboy caps. With the 16" thermowell, it hangs somewhat diagonally into the wort. I placed the end of the temp probe all the way down into the thermowell, so this is pretty close to the center of mass in the fermenter. I saw very minor temp...

HOWTO - Make a BrewPi Fermentation Controller For Cheap

I'm having trouble understanding your chart. Is the ambient temp around your fermentation chamber very low? The fridge temp stays above the beer temp by quite a bit during the early part of the fermentation. And then, at about the time when fermentation activity likely died back, the fridge temp...

Cooling wort with frozen plastic bottles

Small scratches in plastic can create "niches" for bacterial colonies to grow. Bacteria have cell walls that are hydrophobic and can prevent water based solvents like Starsan access to those colonies. Short term contact with Starsan will kill many bacteria in the colony, but not all. Longer term...

HOWTO - Make a BrewPi Fermentation Controller For Cheap

Hmm, interesting thought. I may have to try this out, although I'm not all that concerned about compressor cycling. Keep in mind that while the fridge temp appears to be varying quite a bit, that's stretched over a week. I would guess no more than about 12-15 cycles per day. Most of the time...

Great idea! I have quite a few wine bottles around, but no empties. I will need to rectify that first before I can implement this. :tank:

HOWTO - Make a BrewPi Fermentation Controller For Cheap

Looks great! For your blow off try using a plastic gallon milk/water jug. The hose slides right into the handle of the jug and keeps it below water/sani level in the jug. Plus it has a smaller footprint than the bed pan you're using. Just a suggestion! Sent from my iPad using Home...

    CFC build quick-connects?

Steve: I use Bobby's Big C female connectors on most of my brew hoses (except the one that connects to my kettle, and that one uses a BL on the kettle end): http://www.brewhardware.com/fittings-75/102-camlock-disconnects These have a 1/2" ID, so no flow restriction and work great for...

Go into your router's configuration page and have it list all the devices on your local network. It should have assigned an IP address to the WiFi dongle on your RPi. Use this IP address to access the BrewPi web page.

HOWTO - Make a BrewPi Fermentation Controller For Cheap

Nah, the duty cycle on the fridge is really low. It is on maybe a total of an hour or two a day. In contrast, I have a 600 bottle wine cabinet that runs about 50% duty cycle, so a huge difference despite roughly the same temp range. I'm very impressed by how efficient this chest freezer is. The...

HOWTO - Make a BrewPi Fermentation Controller For Cheap

Here's my fermentation chamber controlled for a week now using my BrewPi. I just have one carboy fermenting a Dopplesticke Altbier that I brewed last Saturday. Yeast is WLP036, and I'm fermenting at 57F for 8 days before I kick it up to 68 for a 2 day diacetyl rest, and then cold crash it...

    CFC build quick-connects?

I do the same as Rauoliii. I use male camlocks from Brewhardware (and even the camlock caps to keep bugs out of my CFC when not in use). All of my brew hoses (1/2" silicone) have female camlock fittings, so my kettle manifold, pump, cartridge filter, etc have male camlock connectors. I also have...

Future Kegerator - Anyone seen one like this?

I don't think you will find a fridge rebuild kit, but you could certainly replace the compressor. Assuming the evaporator and condenser are both leak free, you could replace the compressor with a small one designed for a fridge and it should work. You would probably have to replace the capillary...

Those are great prices, especially on the Amphenol stereo plugs. I will need to get some of those. Thanks for the links! :rockin:

Wow, how many 1-wire connections do you need? Radio Shack sells them at about $3.50 for two: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103452 These work fine in my hands.
